Investigation of zinc storage capacity of WS2 nanosheets for rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries

Bin Tang et al.

Summary: Rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) are highly desired for their low cost and high safety, but the development of suitable cathode materials remains a main challenge. This study demonstrates for the first time that 1T-WS2 nanosheets show promising potential as cathode candidates for rechargeable ZIBs, with large inter-layer spacing and high conductivity, making them competitive materials for zinc-ion batteries.

Fangfang Mao et al.

Summary: Understanding the relationship between electrochemical performance and microstructural variation of electrodes is essential for developing high-performance electrode materials. The orthorhombic V2O5 nanowires as a cathode material for Zn-ion batteries demonstrated a reversible capacity of 276 mA h g(-1) and structural evolution during cycling, with morphology changing from nanowires to nanofibers. The cycling performance curve showed three distinct regions: initial capacity increase, fast capacity decay, and relatively stable capacity regions.

Towards high-areal-capacity aqueous zinc-manganese batteries: promoting MnO2 dissolution by redox mediators

Jiafeng Lei et al.

Summary: Researchers introduced a mediator strategy to facilitate MnO2 dissolution and recover 'lost' capacity from exfoliated MnO2, improving cycling stability at high areal capacity. The iodide mediator chemically reduces solid MnO2 to form Mn2+ and oxidizes to tri-iodide (I-3(-)), completing one mediation cycle. This strategy significantly enhances the cycling stability and demonstrates the highest areal capacity achieved for reported Zn-Mn batteries.
