Continuous and emerging challenges of silver scurf disease in potato

Rahul Kumar Tiwari et al.

Summary: Potato silver scurf is a rapidly spreading disease that severely affects potato cultivation and trade, especially in developing countries. The lack of resistant cultivars and the emergence of fungicide-resistant strains have made it a major cause of non-acceptance of commercial potatoes. However, new fungicide molecules and beneficial microbial antagonists show promise in mitigating the disease. Germplasm screening for disease resistance can aid in the development of resistant potato cultivars.

Chitosan is an effective inhibitor against potato dry rot caused by Fusarium oxysporum

Jie Ren et al.

Summary: Chitosan, as a biopolymer, shows significant inhibition on Fusarium oxysporum-induced potato dry rot, enhancing plant resistance to pathogens. The mycelial growth and spore germination of F. oxysporum are significantly inhibited by chitosan, and its pathogenicity is reduced. Transcriptional analysis reveals that chitosan treatment affects genes related to protein metabolism, stress tolerance, and cell structure in F. oxysporum, suggesting chitosan as a promising natural fungicide for this disease.

Integrating GC-MS and ssRNA-Seq analysis to identify long non-coding RNAs related to terpenoid biosynthesis in Cinnamomum camphora

Zhouxian Ni et al.

Summary: Terpenoids are the main constituents in the leaf essential oil of Cinnamomum camphora, which is widely used in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. This study identified long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) related to terpenoid biosynthesis in different chemotypes of C. camphora and constructed regulatory networks for terpenoid biosynthesis. The results provide valuable genetic resources for further research on the functions of lncRNAs and their regulatory roles in terpenoid biosynthesis.

Impact of Fusarium dry rot on physicochemical attributes of potato tubers during postharvest storage

Rahul Kumar Tiwari et al.

Summary: The study identified Fusarium sambucinum and Fusarium oxysporum as the major fungi causing Fusarium dry rot in potato tubers, with a greater aggressiveness of FS compared to FO. 'Kufri Pukhraj' was more susceptible to infection compared to 'Kufri Chipsona 3', showing larger lesion diameter, fungus penetration, and rot volumes during storage. Mixed inoculum of Fusarium species led to higher damage in both cultivars, impacting the starch and amylose content, while increasing amylopectin, reducing sugars, sucrose, and total soluble sugar content. Pearson correlation analysis revealed negative correlation between lesion diameter, rot volume, and starch/amylose content, while positive correlation with amylopectin, reducing sugars, sucrose, and total soluble sugar. The study emphasized the impact of storage fungi infection on the nutritional quality of potato tubers, a critical concern for both consumers and processing industries.
