Borates as a Traceless Activation Group for Intermolecular Alkylarylation of Ethylene through Photoredox/Nickel Dual Catalysis

Xiaoliang Feng et al.

Summary: A formal ethylene alkylarylation reaction with aryl halides and alkyl oxalates was reported, enabled by synergistic photoredox/nickel catalysis. The method utilizes borates as a traceless activation group, achieving excellent functional groups compatibility and broad substrate scope under mild conditions.

Dual Nickel/Photoredox-Catalyzed Deaminative Cross-Coupling of Sterically Hindered Primary Amines

Julia R. Dorsheimer et al.

Summary: This study reports a new method to activate alpha-3 degrees amines for deaminative arylation by condensing with an electron-rich aldehyde and combining this reactivity with nickel metallaphotoredox to generate benzylic quaternary centers. The reaction is accelerated by added ammonium salts, which inhibit nickel black formation and accelerate the overall reaction rate. The study demonstrates a broad scope of coupling partners and shows an expedited synthesis of ALK2 inhibitors.

Photocatalytic Dehydroxymethylative Arylation by Synergistic Cerium and Nickel Catalysis

Yuegang Chen et al.

Summary: Under mild reaction conditions, inexpensive cerium and nickel catalysts enable the use of easily accessible free alcohols as robust carbon pronucleophiles in selective C(sp(3))-C(sp(2)) cross-couplings. The identification of steric benzoate ligands for robust cerium complexes facilitates the synergy of cerium catalysis in emerging metallaphotoredox catalysis. Mechanistic investigations have led to the identification of a tribenzoate cerium(III) complex as a viable intermediate in the reaction.

Metallaphotoredox-enabled deoxygenative arylation of alcohols

Zhe Dong et al.

Summary: Metal-catalysed cross-couplings are widely used for the formation of C-C bonds, but alkyl cross-couplings using alcohols as coupling partners remain relatively underdeveloped. A new method for direct deoxygenative cross-coupling of free alcohols has been developed, showing potential for a wide range of applications, including the pharmaceutical industry. This technology represents a general strategy for combining in situ alcohol activation with transition metal catalysis.

Nickel-catalyzed formation of quaternary carbon centers using tertiary alkyl electrophiles

Weichao Xue et al.

Summary: The transformation of sterically hindered tertiary alkyl electrophiles under nickel-catalyzed conditions to forge C(sp(3))-C bonds and create all-carbon quaternary centers has received increasing attention in recent years. This process involves the activation of tertiary alkyl electrophiles through ionic or radical pathways, benefiting the formation of C-C bonds in coupling reactions and accelerating radical addition reactions.

Reframing primary alkyl amines as aliphatic building blocks

Kathleen J. Berger et al.

Summary: While traditionally considered inert to substitution chemistry, primary aliphatic amines have been shown to be valuable C(sp(3)) synthons in recent advances in aliphatic deamination chemistry. Cross-coupling and photocatalyzed transformations using polar and radical mechanisms are compared with oxidative deamination and other transition metal catalyzed reactions.
