High-Q slow light and its localization in a photonic crystal microring

Xiyuan Lu et al.

Summary: The MPhCR combines photonic crystal and whispering gallery mode concepts, opening large bandgaps while maintaining high-Q and compressing mode spectrum. By using slow-light design, WGMs can be localized into photonic crystal defect modes, achieving smaller mode volumes.

Synthetic dimension band structures on a Si CMOS photonic platform

Armandas Balcytis et al.

Summary: Researchers have achieved the first realization of a synthetic frequency dimension on a silicon ring resonator integrated photonic device fabricated using a CMOS process. They confirmed its correspondence to a one-dimensional tight-binding model through optical frequency comb-like spectra and by measuring synthetic band structures. Furthermore, they realized two types of gauge potentials along the frequency dimension and probed their effects through associated band structures. This study represents a key step towards wider adoption of topological principles.

Creating boundaries along a synthetic frequency dimension

Avik Dutt et al.

Summary: The authors propose a straightforward method to construct sharp boundaries in synthetic dimensions using a modulated ring resonator strongly coupled to an auxiliary ring. Various effects associated with such boundaries are explored, and the demonstration of sharp boundaries expands the capability of exploring topological physics, with applications in classical and quantum information processing in synthetic frequency dimensions.

Yaowen Hu et al.

Summary: Developments in integrated photonics have led to the emergence of stable, compact and broadband comb generators. The integrated electro-optic frequency comb presented in this research demonstrates a high conversion efficiency and a wide optical span, and can serve as an on-chip femtosecond pulse source. It also enables the simultaneous effects of electro-optic and third-order nonlinearity, paving the way for practical optical frequency comb generators and exploring new regimes of optical physics.

Topological complex-energy braiding of non-Hermitian bands

Kai Wang et al.

Summary: The recent theoretical work discovered that the braid group characterizes the topology of non-Hermitian periodic systems, where the complex band energies can braid in momentum space. This study introduces a tight-binding lattice model that can achieve arbitrary elements in the braid group of two strands B-2 and experimentally demonstrates topological complex-energy braiding of non-Hermitian bands in a synthetic dimension. The results provide a direct demonstration of the braid-group characterization of non-Hermitian topology and open a pathway for designing and realizing topologically robust phases in open classical and quantum systems.

Real-time observation of frequency Bloch oscillations with fibre loop modulation

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: Bloch oscillations (BOs) were originally predicted for electrons in a solid lattice under a static electric field. Despite challenges, analogies of electron BOs have been experimentally demonstrated for photons, acoustic phonons, and cold atoms. Recently, BOs in the frequency dimension have been proposed and studied using an optical micro-resonator, offering a new approach to controlling light frequency. This study experimentally demonstrates BOs in a synthetic frequency lattice using fibre-loop circuit with detuned phase modulation, suggesting potential applications in optical fibre communication systems.
