Nickel-Mediated Enantioselective Photoredox Allylation of Aldehydes with Visible Light

Francesco Calogero et al.

Summary: In this study, a highly enantioselective photoredox allylation of aldehydes was developed using commercially available allyl acetate and chiral nickel complexes as the catalyst. The reaction proceeded under visible-light irradiation at low temperature, providing good to excellent yields and high enantioselectivity. This methodology shows great potential for practical applications.

Enantioselective Deaminative Alkylation of Amino Acid Derivatives with Unactivated Olefins

Shang-Zheng Sun et al.

Summary: Here, we report the first Ni-catalyzed enantioselective deaminative alkylation of amino acid and peptide derivatives with unactivated olefins. A new sterically encumbered bis(oxazoline) ligand backbone was discovered, offering a de novo technology for accessing enantioenriched sp(3)-sp(3) linkages via sp(3) C-N functionalization. This protocol has a broad scope and generality, even applicable for late-stage functionalization. Additionally, an enantioselective deaminative remote hydroalkylation reaction of unactivated internal olefins is achievable, providing an entry point for forging enantioenriched sp(3)-sp(3) centers at remote sp(3) C-H sites.

α-Selective Ring-Opening Reactions of Bicyclo[1.1.0]butyl Boronic Ester with Nucleophiles

Lin Guo et al.

Summary: The reaction of bicyclo[1.1.0]butyl pinacol boronic ester (BCB-Bpin) with nucleophiles was studied, showing unique reactivity towards heteroatom-centred nucleophiles exclusively at the alpha-position. Aliphatic alcohols, phenols, carboxylic acids, thiols, and sulfonamides were competent nucleophiles, providing access to alpha-heteroatom-substituted cyclobutyl boronic esters. Sterically hindered bis-sulfonamides and related nucleophiles led to cyclopropanes with high trans-selectivity at the beta'-position.

C(sp3)-H Bond Acylation with N-Acyl Imides under Photoredox/Nickel Dual Catalysis

Taline Kerackian et al.

Summary: The novel Ni/photoredox-catalyzed acylation method utilizes C-N bond activation of amides and a radical relay mechanism involving hydrogen-atom transfer, offering an operationally simple approach to accessing alkyl ketones under very mild conditions. The use of bench-stable N-acyl imides as acyl-transfer reagents further simplifies the protocol.

Synthetic and Mechanistic Implications of Chlorine Photoelimination in Nickel/Photoredox C(sp3)-H Cross-Coupling

Stavros K. Kariofillis et al.

Summary: In recent years, the development of light-driven reactions has made significant advancements in synthetic organic chemistry, particularly in combining photoredox and nickel catalysis for challenging cross-coupling reactions. The question of whether photo-induced activation of the nickel catalyst itself could lead to new approaches to cross-coupling has been explored. By utilizing a visible-light-driven mechanism for chlorine radical formation and conducting mechanistic investigations on organometallic Ni complexes relevant to cross-coupling, the study aims to facilitate new catalyst design and develop novel synthetic methods.

Visible-Light-Induced Homolysis of Earth-Abundant Metal-Substrate Complexes: A Complementary Activation Strategy in Photoredox Catalysis

Youssef Abderrazak et al.

Summary: The mainstream applications of visible-light photoredox catalysis mainly involve precious metal Ru-II or Ir-III complexes or organic dyes with low photostability. Earth-abundant metal-based (MLn)-L-n-type complexes are evolving rapidly as alternative photocatalysts that offer economic and ecological advantages and access to complementary inner-sphere mechanistic modes, transcending the inherent limitations of ultrashort excited-state lifetimes. The process of visible-light-induced homolysis (VLIH) involves the formation of light-absorbing ligated metal-substrate complexes that undergo homolytic cleavage for further transformations.

Daniele Mazzarella et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a photocatalytic procedure for the acylation/arylation of unfunctionalized alkyl derivatives in flow, utilizing decatungstate anion and nickel catalyst to form C(sp(3))-C(sp(2)) bonds. The intensified conditions in flow reduce the reaction time significantly, without altering the reaction mechanism, accelerating the overall process.

Light-Driven Carbene Catalysis for the Synthesis of Aliphatic and α-Amino Ketones

Anna Bay et al.

Summary: This study reports the light-driven synthesis of aliphatic and alpha-amino ketones using single-electron NHC operators. Computational and experimental results show that the reactivity of the key radical intermediate depends on the substrate and can be modulated through steric and electronic parameters of the NHC. This methodology is showcased in the direct late-stage functionalization of amino acids and pharmaceutical compounds, highlighting the utility of single-electron NHC operators.

Asymmetric benzylic C(sp3)-H acylation via dual nickel and photoredox catalysis

Leitao Huan et al.

Summary: The study presents an asymmetric benzylic C-H acylation reaction using nickel and photoredox dual catalysis, with carboxylic acids as acyl surrogates, to synthesize high enantioselective alpha-aryl ketones. This method can convert various feedstock carboxylic acids and simple alkylarenes into valuable alpha-aryl ketones, showcasing potential applications in gram-scale synthesis and late-stage modification of medicinally relevant molecules. Mechanistic studies suggest that a bromine-radical-mediated C-H activation strategy plays a crucial role in this reaction.
