Fat on plastic: Metabolic consequences of an LDPE diet in the fat body of the greater wax moth larvae (Galleria mellonella)

Bryan J. Cassone et al.

Summary: The greater wax moth caterpillar larvae actively feed on LDPE plastic, but a diet of LDPE is not enough to sustain optimal larval growth and survival. The larvae retain fat body lipid stores proportional to their polyethylene consumption and maintain oxidative capacity, but show various nutritional deficiencies when fed with LDPE. This study provides new insights into the complex interaction between LDPE biodegradation and the metabolic physiology of this plastic-eating model organism.

Summary: Enzymatic plastic conversion is seen as a potential alternative to traditional plastic waste management, with a focus on biodegradable plastics such as polyesters. However, there are still challenges in applying enzymatic degradation to other commercial plastics. Addressing extensive knowledge gaps and understanding the crucial impact of physicochemical factors on reactions in less well-studied plastic types are essential for expanding the application of enzymatic degradation.

In vitro degradation of low-density polyethylene by new bacteria from larvae of the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella

Zahra Montazer et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the ability of three bacterial species isolated from greater wax moth larvae to utilize low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as a sole carbon source. Results showed that these bacteria could degrade LDPE and bacterial consortia were more effective in degrading LDPE than individual species. Gas chromatographic analyses revealed the presence of linear alkanes and unknown putative LDPE hydrolysis products in some bacterial culture media.

Degradation of plastic waste using stimulated and naturally occurring microbial strains

Navid Taghavi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biodegradation capability of microbial strains derived from soil, activated sludge, farm sludge, and worms' excreta on high-density polyethylene, polystyrene foam, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate under unstimulated and stimulated conditions. The most effective plastic-degrading microbes were identified as Penicillium raperi, Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium glaucoroseum, and Pseudomonas sp. In the mixed condition, incubation of polyethylene with Aspergillus flavus showed the highest weight loss at 5.5%. Further analysis using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy revealed the formation of new functional groups on the treated plastics.

Polystyrene Biodegradation by Tenebrio molitor Larvae: Identification of Generated Substances Using a GC-MS Untargeted Screening Method

Emmanouil Tsochatzis et al.

Summary: A GC-MS method was used to screen and evaluate the chemical compounds generated during the biodegradation of polystyrene (PS) with Tenebrio molitor larvae, identifying various compounds including trimers, volatiles, and non-intentionally added substances. Bioactive molecules like fatty acids and amides were also identified in the biomass of the insects, suggesting enzymatic and biochemical activity during the degradation process. The overall degradation rate of PS was found to be 13%, highlighting the potential of biorecycling with these insects.

Confirmation of biodegradation of low-density polyethylene in dark- versus yellow- mealworms (larvae of Tenebrio obscurus versus Tenebrio molitor) via. gut microbe-independent depolymerization

Shan-Shan Yang et al.

Summary: The larvae of Tenebrio obscurus and Tenebrio molitor demonstrated similar capacity for degrading LDPE foams, showing a broad depolymerization pattern with a digestion rate of nearly 40% to CO2. Antibiotic suppression of gut microbes did not halt depolymerization, indicating that LDPE biodegradation in T. obscurus was independent of gut microbes. High-throughput sequencing revealed significant shifts in the gut microbial community during LDPE feeding in both Tenebrio species.

The impact of polystyrene consumption by edible insects Tenebrio molitor and Zophobas morio on their nutritional value, cytotoxicity, and oxidative stress parameters

Ewelina Zielinska et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the nutritional value, cytotoxicity, and oxidative stress parameters in cells of selected insect species (Tenebrio molitor and Zophobas mores) after consuming Styrofoam for 30 days. The research also included a consumer survey on willingness to eat insects fed with Styrofoam. Mealworms fed with Styrofoam had higher protein and ash content with reduced fat and carbohydrate content, while no significant difference was observed in superworms. Additionally, Styrofoam did not affect the health status of gut cells in examined insects, and replacing traditional insect diet with polystyrene foam did not increase cytotoxic properties in studied concentrations.
