A chromosome-scale reference genome and genome-wide genetic variations elucidate adaptation in yak

Qiu-mei Ji et al.

Summary: The yak, an important livestock animal for indigenous people in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and Himalayas, has had its genome sequenced in 2012 with limitations due to Illumina sequencing technology. A new high-quality chromosome-scale yak genome assembly (BosGru_PB_v1.0) was created using long-read sequencing, showing improvements in continuity and gene model completeness. Comparison of domestic and wild yak genomes revealed higher diversity in wild yak despite a genetic bottleneck, with potential for breed-specific gene identification through whole-genome alignment.

Population genome of the newly discovered Jinchuan yak to understand its adaptive evolution in extreme environments and generation mechanism of the multirib trait

Daoliang Lan et al.

Summary: The Jinchuan yak population, discovered in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, shows unique multirib traits that may have originated around 6290 years ago due to geological changes. Through adaptive evolution in extreme plateau environments, the population has enhanced skeletal function-related genes, with TUBA8 and TUBA4A genes potentially associated with the multirib trait.

Structural Variants Selected during Yak Domestication Inferred from Long-Read Whole-Genome Sequencing

Shangzhe Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents a chromosome-scale reference genome for domestic yaks and identifies a large number of structural variants (SVs) that contain repetitive DNA sequences, with some located near genes. By comparing SVs in domestic and wild yaks, genes related to the nervous system, behavior, immunity, and reproduction were found to have potentially been targeted by artificial selection during yak domestication, providing new insights into the domestication of high-altitude animals.

Summary: The study assembled high-quality genomes of genetically diverse rice accessions, discovering a large number of structural variations and gene copy number variations. By using a graph-based genome, the research explored the impact of these variations on rice domestication and environmental adaptation.

Structural variants are a major source of gene expression differences in humans and often affect multiple nearby genes

Alexandra J. Scott et al.

Summary: Structural variants are a significant source of human genome diversity and have substantial effects on gene expression. Common SVs are enriched in eQTLs, while rare SVs also play a significant role in gene expression outliers.
