Convolutional Neural Networks as a Model of the Visual System: Past, Present, and Future

Grace W. Lindsay

Summary: Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are successful tools inspired by early findings in biological vision research, serving as advanced models for neural activity and visual behavior. Experimenting with and understanding CNNs can provide deeper insights into biological vision, while also presenting new opportunities for their use in vision research.

Distinct Representational Structure and Localization for Visual Encoding and Recall during Visual Imagery

Wilma A. Bainbridge et al.

Summary: During memory recall and visual imagery, reinstatement is believed to occur by echoing neural patterns from encoding. This study used ultra-high-field functional magnetic resonance imaging to compare encoding and recall processes, finding decodable information at all levels of granularity during encoding, but primarily at the coarse level with some fine-level information during recall. Results suggest that visual recall displays a different representational structure and localization from encoding.

Cortical Representations of Visual Stimuli Shift Locations with Changes in Memory States

Nicole M. Long et al.

Summary: The study shows that intrinsic biases toward memory encoding versus retrieval determine the specific cortical locations of content representations, even independently of task demands. Biases in attentional networks reflected preferences toward encoding or retrieval, and memory states predicted shifts of object representations. Differential connectivity between visual and ventral parietal cortices with the hippocampus during memory encoding versus retrieval suggests the hippocampus mediates cortical shifts in content representations.

A network linking scene perception and spatial memory systems in posterior cerebral cortex

Adam Steel et al.

Summary: This study utilized fine-grained individual-subject fMRI to identify three cortical areas in the human brain, located near the scene perception network, that selectively activate during recalling familiar real-world locations. Despite their proximity to scene-perception areas, these regions form a distinct functional network that interfaces with spatial memory systems during naturalistic scene understanding. These findings offer a new framework for comprehending how the brain implements memory-guided visual behaviors, such as navigation.
