Optimizing feed modulation for coupled methane and NOx conversion over Pd-Pt/Mn0.5Fe2.5O4/Al2O3 monolith catalyst

Kyle Karinshak et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impacts of feed modulation and catalyst design parameters on the conversion of methane and NOx. The results show that the dual-layer catalyst outperforms the single-layer catalyst in terms of methane conversion. The enhancement in methane conversion is related to its nonmonotonic dependence on oxygen, and the transient activity spike is associated with the presence of water during the feed transition.

Low-Emission Alternative Energy for Transport in the EU: State of Play of Research and Innovation

Alejandro Ortega et al.

Summary: The European Commission's 2030 Climate target plan aims to reduce GHG emissions by at least 55% by 2030, with a focus on contributions from all transport modes. Recent research shows that LNG refueling stations, biofuels for road transport, and alternative aviation fuels are among the technologies with the highest investments, with methane-based fuels receiving the most attention.

Operando characterisation of alumina-supported bimetallic Pd-Pt catalysts during methane oxidation in dry and wet conditions

Alexander Large et al.

Summary: Near ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) was used to study the chemical states of alumina-supported monometallic Pd and bimetallic Pd-Pt nanocatalysts under methane oxidation conditions. The presence of Pt was found to be linked to Pd oxidation and catalyst activity under stoichiometric reaction conditions, while under oxygen-rich conditions, the behavior was less clear. However, adding Pt in place of Pd still showed benefits for complete oxidation of methane.

Biomethane as alternative fuel for the EU road sector: analysis of existing and planned infrastructure

M. Prussi et al.

Summary: Upgrading biogas to biomethane is a feasible option for greening the European energy sector, particularly in transport. However, challenges such as infrastructure fragmentation and high costs may hinder the widespread diffusion of biomethane as an alternative fuel. Efforts are needed to carefully assess the impact of biomethane on greenhouse gas emissions and to ensure a synchronized deployment of vehicles, infrastructure, and production facilities to prevent barriers to its development.

Operando high-pressure investigation of size-controlled CuZn catalysts for the methanol synthesis reaction

Nuria J. Divins et al.

Summary: The study found that Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 and CuZn/SiO2 exhibit similar activity and methanol selectivity, but the methanol yield decreases with time on stream for the latter sample. X-ray absorption spectroscopy data during operation show the formation of a ZnO-rich shell on CuZn/SiO2, indicating the beneficial effect of even diluted Zn.

Atomic Structure of Pd-, Pt-, and PdPt-Based Catalysts of Total Oxidation of Methane: In Situ EXAFS Study

Andrey A. Saraev et al.

Summary: The study reveals that platinum and bimetallic palladium-platinum catalysts are more stable in the total oxidation of methane compared to palladium catalysts. All catalysts exhibit a core-shell structure, where the metallic core is covered by an oxide shell. The evolution of the active component during the methane oxidation process is proposed and discussed.

Engineering catalyst supports to stabilize PdOx two-dimensional rafts for water-tolerant methane oxidation

Haifeng Xiong et al.

Summary: This study presents a catalyst synthesis approach based on anchoring metal single atoms on a support surface, resulting in improved reaction rates and water tolerance during methane oxidation. The results demonstrate that trapping single atoms could be an important tool for controlling the nucleation and growth of metal clusters in heterogeneous catalysts.

CH4 Oxidation Activity in Pd and Pt-Pd Bimetallic Catalysts: Correlation with Surface PdOx Quantified from the DRIFTS Study

Eun Jeong Jang et al.

Summary: The amount of surface PdOx shows a linear correlation with CH4 oxidation activity in Pd-based catalysts, independent of electronic properties of Pd. Reoxidizing Pd/Al2O3 catalysts before CO adsorption DRIFTS data collection minimizes discrepancies between catalytically relevant phases and characterized surface composition, further emphasizing the relationship between surface PdOx and CH4 oxidation activity. The study indicates that surface PdOx plays a critical role in determining CH4 oxidation activity, providing valuable insights for the development of Pd-based catalysts with improved performance.

Effect of Short Reducing Pulses on the Dynamic Structure, Activity, and Stability of Pd/Al2O3 for Wet Lean Methane Oxidation

Tanja Franken et al.

Summary: In this study, the activity of Pd/Al2O3 in wet lean CH4 oxidation was enhanced by applying repeated short reducing pulses (SRP), leading to a significant decrease in apparent activation energy compared to static operation. The degraded activity after thermal aging was also recovered by the same approach. Kinetic models showed that highly active PdOx species were formed and maintained during SRP operation, suggesting a practical range of Pd oxidation degree (25-65% Pd content) to preserve high CH4 conversion.

Structural Evolution of Bimetallic PtPd/CeO2 Methane Oxidation Catalysts Prepared by Dry Milling

Andrea Mussio et al.

Summary: Bimetallic Pt-Pd catalysts supported on ceria show improved performance in wet conditions, possibly due to the formation of unique mushroom-like structures resulting from the alloying of Pt and Pd. Catalyst prepared by milling Pd metal and ceria first, followed by the addition of Pt, exhibits better performance compared to conventional impregnated samples.

Pt-Pd bimetallic effect in PtxPd1-x/(Ce,Zr,La)O2 catalysts for NOx, HC and CO elimination

Ting Wang et al.

Summary: The Pt-Pd bimetallic catalysts with atomic-level alloy structure exhibit superior catalytic performance, especially for NO and HC conversions, due to their higher dynamic oxygen storage/release capacity. The presence of H2O and CO2 has little influence on the catalytic activity of Pt0.8Pd0.2/CZL, making it a promising catalyst for emissions control.
