Structural characterization and tartary buckwheat polysaccharides alleviate insulin resistance by suppressing SOCS3-induced IRS1 protein degradation

Qiang Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanisms by which tartary buckwheat root polysaccharide (TBRP-1) treatment can alleviate diabetes mellitus. The results showed that TBRP-1 treatment enhanced glucose uptake in insulin resistant cells and lowered blood glucose levels and hepatic lipids in diabetic mice. The underlying molecular mechanisms involved the suppression of SOCS3 expression and enhancement of IRS1 expression, thus alleviating insulin resistance.

Polysaccharide fraction from greens of Raphanus sativus alleviates high fat diet-induced obesity

Moon Ho Do et al.

Summary: In high fat diet-induced obese mice, the polysaccharide fraction of radish greens showed anti-obesity activity by reducing weight gain and body fat percentage. This effect was achieved through improving gut barrier function, modulating gut microbiota, and regulating lipid metabolism.

Plant protein reduces serum cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolemia hamsters by modulating the compositions of gut microbiota and metabolites

Li-Tao Tong et al.

Summary: Plant proteins, particularly pea protein, have been found to reduce cardio-cerebrovascular disease-related mortality by lowering serum cholesterol levels through influencing gut microbiota. In a hamster study, it was observed that pea protein had a different effect on cholesterol compared to pork protein. Changes in gut microbiota and metabolites, such as Muribaculaceae and Erysipelotrichaceae, were associated with the cholesterol-lowering effects of pea protein and the opposite effects of pork protein.

The gut commensal fungus, Candida parapsilosis, promotes high fat-diet induced obesity in mice

Shanshan Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that the gut commensal Candida parapsilosis is a causative fungus for the development of high fat-diet induced obesity in mice, highlighting the therapeutic strategy targeting gut fungi. In addition, the results suggest that fungi could represent possible targets for combating obesity.

The pesticide chlorpyrifos promotes obesity by inhibiting diet-induced thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue

Bo Wang et al.

Summary: The commonly used pesticide chlorpyrifos reduces energy expenditure by inhibiting diet-induced thermogenesis, contributing to obesity and insulin resistance. The suppression of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) and mitochondrial respiration in brown adipose tissue (BAT) by chlorpyrifos suggests its potential contribution to the obesity epidemic.
