Role of Brain-Gut-Microbiota Axis in Depression: Emerging Therapeutic Avenues

Shvetank Bhatt et al.

Summary: The human gut microbiota has a significant impact on central nervous system-related diseases, including major depressive disorder (MDD). The imbalance of the brain-gut-microbiota axis plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of depression. The regulation of gut microbiota is emerging as a new treatment modality for MDD.

A systematic review of gut microbiota composition in observational studies of major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia

A. J. McGuinness et al.

Summary: The study investigated differences in gut microbiota composition between major psychiatric disorder patients and healthy individuals, finding disparities in overall community composition but no significant variation in the number or distribution of bacteria. Specific bacterial taxa associated with mental disorders were identified, suggesting potential commonalities in microbial signatures across different disorders. Further research using robust methodologies and guidelines is needed to enhance understanding of the role of gut microbiota in mental and brain health.

Insomnia in Tourette Syndrome and Chronic Tic Disorder

Kayoko Isomura et al.

Summary: The study found a significantly higher prevalence of insomnia in Tourette syndrome (TS) and chronic tic disorder (CTD), which is associated with familial factors, neurodevelopmental comorbidities, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)/medication. Insomnia should be routinely assessed and managed in TS/CTD patients.

Microbiota in neuroinflammation and synaptic dysfunction: a focus on Alzheimer's disease

Summary: The gut microbiota is implicated in the control of brain functions through modulation of neuroinflammation and direct stimulation of neuronal activity via microglial and vagus nerve. This has important implications for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.

Evaluating the Effects of Diet-Gut Microbiota Interactions on Sleep Traits Using the UK Biobank Cohort

Xin Qi et al.

Summary: This study used data from the UK Biobank cohort and found genetic correlations and interactions between diet habits and gut microbiota that are associated with sleep. Multiple diet-gut microbiota interactions associated with sleep were identified, providing new insights into the mechanisms of how diet and gut microbiota affect sleep.

Lifetime Prevalence, Predictors and Comorbidities of Tic Disorders: A Population-Based Survey of Children and Adolescents in Iran

Mohammad Reza Mohammadi et al.

Summary: In this population-based survey, the lifetime prevalence of tic disorders among Iranian children and adolescents was found to be 1.5%, with the highest prevalence in the age range of 15-18 years at 1.9%. A significant proportion (57.7%) of patients with tic disorders had comorbidities with other psychiatric disorders, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive treatment approaches and education for families.

Bacteria-derived long chain fatty acid exhibits anti-inflammatory properties in colitis

Julien Pujo et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that a probiotic strain contained increased levels of 3-hydroxyoctadecaenoic acid (C18-3OH), which was shown to decrease colitis in mice and was associated with anti-inflammatory properties of prebiotic fructooligosaccharides (FOS). The concentration of C18-3OH was correlated with an increase in specific bacterial genera in the microbiota. This suggests that C18-3OH production by bacteria could play a role in the anti-inflammatory properties of probiotics and in microbiota/host interactions.

The gut microbiota-brain axis in behaviour and brain disorders

Livia H. Morais et al.

Summary: This Review discusses the intricate and potentially important connections between the gut microbiota and the brain, involving bidirectional communication along the gut-brain axis. Emerging evidence suggests that disruptions in microbial communities may be implicated in neurological disorders, with animal models providing valuable insights into the pathways linking the gut and the brain which could have tangible impacts on human health.

Clinical Correlates of Health-Related Quality of Life in Adults With Chronic Tic Disorder

David A. Isaacs et al.

Summary: Tics are the hallmark feature of Tourette syndrome, but psychiatric and sensory symptoms are increasingly recognized as core manifestations of the disorder, exerting greater influence on quality of life than tics themselves. Research has found significant associations between common psychiatric and sensory symptoms and health-related quality of life in adults with chronic tic disorders, with systematic assessment of psychiatric comorbidities being imperative for improving quality of life in this population.

Differences in the Concentration of the Fecal Neurotransmitters GABA and Glutamate Are Associated with Microbial Composition among Healthy Human Subjects

Hend Altaib et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between fecal GABA concentration and microbial composition in over 70 human participants, finding that high-GABA samples had lower microbial diversity. Specifically, the family Bifidobacteriaceae exhibited high abundance in the high-GABA group, suggesting a potential link between Bifidobacterium abundance and high fecal GABA content in healthy individuals. These findings may contribute to the development of probiotics to enhance microbial GABA production, supporting overall physical and psychiatric health of the host.

Depicting the composition of gut microbiota in children with tic disorders: an exploratory study

Wenjie Xi et al.

Summary: The study found differences in the gut microbiota profile of children with tic disorder compared to healthy controls, potentially related to distinct bacterial species and metabolic functions. The use of a random forest model accurately distinguished tic disorder from healthy controls, with significant correlations observed between tic symptom severity and specific bacterial species and gut microbiota metabolic functions. Additionally, DRA drug treatment in tic disorder children led to changes in the gut microbiota composition and metabolism, including an increase in potential enteric pathogens and alterations in various metabolic functions.
