Roadmap on chaos-inspired imaging technologies (CI2-Tech)

Joseph Rosen et al.

Summary: In recent years, the rapid development of chaos-inspired imaging technologies, consisting of non-invasive and invasive directions, has led to faster and smarter imaging capabilities. Non-invasive imaging through scattering layers has achieved significant progress, while invasive imaging exploits chaos to achieve special imaging characteristics and increase dimensionalities beyond the limits of conventional imagers. This roadmap presents the current and future challenges in both invasive and non-invasive imaging technologies.

Speckle in polarization structured light

Basant Kumar et al.

Summary: The study reveals distinct spatial textures in the speckle patterns produced when polarization structured light beams pass through a random diffuser screen, showing notable differences between V-point and C-point illuminations compared to scalar speckle. Utilizing the GLCM methodology to extract spatial textural features from speckle patterns, the PCA technique proves effective in identifying the nature of the illuminating beam by observing the texture properties of the resultant speckle pattern. This suggests the potential for information transmission through random media by altering the polarization structure of the incident beam.

Increasing field of view and signal to noise ratio in the quantitative phase imaging with phase shifting holography based on the Hanbury Brown-Twiss approach

Li Chen et al.

Summary: Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is essential for exploring properties of transparent and absorption-free samples, with holography widely used to record both amplitude and phase of optical fields. However, conventional holographic methods face challenges when objects are obscured by scattering media. Advanced holographic methods based on Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) approach, such as off-axis holography, phase-shifting holography, and polarization-based phase-shifting holography, show enhanced imaging capabilities and wider field of view in comparison. The use of orthogonally-polarized light as reference light in the third method demonstrates superior performance in imaging complex phase samples.

High-resolution non-line-of-sight imaging employing active focusing

Ruizhi Cao et al.

Summary: Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging is a rapidly developing research direction with significant applications in autonomous vehicles, remote sensing, and other areas. This study introduces a method called UNCOVER focusing, which manipulates light to counter scattering and achieves NLOS imaging with unprecedented resolution. By actively focusing light onto hidden targets using wavefront shaping, the method forms a near diffraction-limited focus smaller than the object itself, enabling high-resolution imaging.

Large field-of-view non-invasive imaging through scattering layers using fluctuating random illumination

Lei Zhu et al.

Summary: The authors demonstrate a method for non-invasive fluorescence imaging behind scattering layers that extends beyond the optical memory effect. By demixing speckle patterns emitted by a fluorescent object using matrix factorization and fingerprint-based reconstruction, they achieve imaging with a larger field of view. Experimental validation confirms the efficiency and robustness of the method across various fluorescent samples.

Structured transmittance illumination coherence holography

Aditya Chandra Mandal et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new method for reconstructing the complex coherence function in coherence holography without an interferometric setup. The technique, named structured transmittance illumination coherence holography (STICH), uses structured pattern projections and single-pixel detectors to measure the intensity cross-covariance and reconstruct the complex coherence. A simple experimental setup and computer modeling results are presented to validate the idea.

Single-Shot Recognition of 3D Phase Images With Deep Learning

Weiru Fan et al.

Summary: Optical phase is crucial for biomedical imaging and astronomical observation, but it is often obscured by scattering media. Current methods are limited in retrieving phases at different depths. To address this challenge, a speckle three-dimensional reconstruction network (STRN) is developed to simultaneously extract multiple phase objects at different depths with high fidelity from speckle patterns.

High Bandwidth-Utilization Digital Holographic Multiplexing: An Approach Using Kramers-Kronig Relations

Zhengzhong Huang et al.

Summary: Modern quantitative optical imaging is advancing towards high throughput and powerful data processing capabilities. Holography is a strong technique for measuring phase delays introduced by light-matter interactions. Digital holography can increase the spatial bandwidth utilization of imaging sensors through off-axis multiplexing, making it a valuable tool for high-throughput quantitative optical imaging. By incorporating the Kramers-Kronig relation into off-axis multiplexing, the bandwidth utilization of sensors can be increased, allowing for overlapping between signal and unwanted spectra. In a diffraction-limited optical system, the sensor's bandwidth utilization can reach 78.5% in a single hologram, offering a new approach to multiplexing quantitative optical imaging and improving the performance of modern optical microscopes in different spectral regimes.

Summary: Holography is a powerful tool for recording wave information, and a recent advancement has introduced a holographic imaging method that does not require an interferometric setup or coherent light source, allowing the phase image of an object to be obtained directly from a single intensity measurement. This new method provides a convenient and efficient approach to holographic imaging without the need for iterative processes or strict constraints.

Higher-order Stokes-parameter correlation to restore the twisted wave front propagating through a scattering medium

Tushar Sarkar et al.

Summary: A non-interferometric method was proposed and experimentally demonstrated to quantitatively determine the topological charge and complete phase structure of a vortex beam scattered by random media. The theoretical basis developed was supported by numerical simulations and experimental results, with good agreement between them. The technique involves coupling spatial and polarization modes of coherent light before entering the scattering medium and retrieving complex polarization correlation functions to reconstruct twisted wavefronts.
