CURRENT STATUS AND MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF ZUCCHINI YELLOW MOSAIC VIRUS (ZYMV) INFECTING RIDGE GOURD (LUFFAACUTANGULA L) IN DIFFERENT REGIONS OF PUNJAB, PAKISTAN

Zohaib Asad et al.

Summary: This study collected 300 samples of ridge gourd with virus-like symptoms in Pakistan and confirmed the presence of Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) through ELISA testing and sequence analysis. The study also found that the ZYMV isolates in Pakistan have a close relationship with isolates from South Korea, China, and Turkey, suggesting an Asian origin. The identification of these new ZYMV isolates strengthens the breeding programs for developing resistant genotypes.

Alternaria alternata as endophyte and pathogen

Mara DeMers

Summary: Alternaria alternata is a common fungus species that can be found both as an endophyte and a pathogen in plants. However, doubts remain about the scope of A. alternata within the genus due to its varied symbiotic interactions and wide host range. The unstable taxonomy history of Alternaria and the reliance on limited morphological characters and host specificity associated with toxins have contributed to these doubts.

Epidemiological and ecological consequences of virus manipulation of host and vector in plant virus transmission

Nik J. Cunniffe et al.

Summary: Plant viruses are often transmitted by insect vectors, and the transmission can be affected by the preferences and infection status of the vectors. Mathematical modelling has been used to study the effects of vector preferences and infection on plant virus epidemics, showing how these factors impact disease incidence and transmission dynamics. This research highlights the importance of considering the interaction between virus infection, vector behavior, and population dynamics for a comprehensive understanding of plant virus epidemics.
