Evaluation of Pyriproxyfen Effects on Aedes aegypti and Predatory Mosquito Toxorhynchites rutilus (Diptera: Culicidae)

Abdullah A. Alomar et al.

Summary: This study found that larval exposure to Pyriproxyfen (PPF) had negligible effects on adult emergence and lifespan of predatory mosquito Toxorhynchites rutilus, and did not influence the weight of adult Aedes aegypti. This suggests that using PPF to control mosquito vectors may have low effects on mosquito biocontrol agents and can be used in combination with other control methods.

A numerical framework for genetic hitchhiking in populations of variable size

Eric Friedlander et al.

Summary: This study uses the Wright-Fisher diffusion model to simulate the evolution of linked neutral variation and presents a method for numerically evaluating the dynamics of this diffusion with selection and recombination. The method allows for quantifying the reduction and recovery of genetic diversity and identifying distortions in the site-frequency spectra of neutral variation linked to loci under selection.

Temperature-Mediated Effects on Mayaro Virus Vector Competency of Florida Aedes aegypti Mosquito Vectors

Abdullah A. Alomar et al.

Summary: The influence of temperature and time on Mayaro virus (MAYV) infection and replication in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes was evaluated. Higher temperature facilitated the transmission of MAYV, and the salivary gland barrier in Florida Ae. aegypti limited the risk of transmission.

Interactions between vector competence to chikungunya virus and resistance to deltamethrin in Aedes aegypti laboratory lines?

Lanjiao Wang et al.

Summary: This study found three mosquito lines with different resistance profiles to deltamethrin in French Guiana, and observed significant differences in their ability to carry and transmit the chikungunya virus. Furthermore, certain genes related to resistance were found to be variably overexpressed in the midgut of mosquitoes after an infectious bloodmeal. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between mosquito resistance and vector competence.

Ingestion of spinosad-containing toxic sugar bait alters Aedes albopictus vector competence and vectorial capacity for dengue virus

Abdullah A. Alomar et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of consuming toxic sugar bait on the vectorial capacity of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes for dengue virus. It found that while ingestion of the bait increased the mosquito's susceptibility to virus infection and transmission, it also reduced their survival rate, ultimately resulting in a lower predicted vectorial capacity.

Permethrin Resistance in Aedes aegypti Affects Aspects of Vectorial Capacity

Tse-Yu Chen et al.

Summary: Pyrethroids, commonly used insecticides against mosquitoes, face worldwide resistance that threatens mosquito control. Resistance is linked to mutations in the voltage gated sodium channel gene. A study on a permethrin-resistant Aedes aegypti population revealed higher permethrin resistance levels and increased threat of disease transmission. The population showed longer survival and higher dissemination rates for dengue virus, impacting vectorial capacity and warranting global concern.

Geographic Partitioning of Dengue Virus Transmission Risk in Florida

Caroline J. Stephenson et al.

Summary: Dengue viruses (DENVs) cause the greatest public health burden globally among arthropod-borne viruses, with transmission risk expanding from tropical to subtropical regions due to the increasing range of its principal mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti. In Florida, focal outbreaks of dengue fever (dengue) have increased since 2009, and the study found that low passage DENVs were more infectious to and had higher transmission potential by Ae. aegypti mosquitoes. Vector competence across all DENV serotypes was greater for mosquitoes from areas with the highest dengue incidence in south FL compared to north FL, indicating a targeted mosquito-plus-pathogen screening approach could help estimate DENV transmission risk more accurately.

Juvenile hormone analog enhances Zika virus infection in Aedes aegypti

Abdullah A. Alomar et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that insecticides have a significant impact on mosquito life history and vector competence parameters, particularly through interactive effects of insecticides and temperature. Insecticides can enhance female mosquito infection with Zika virus, highlighting the importance of considering this when implementing control strategies.

Influence of Pyrethroid Resistance on Vector Competency for Zika Virus by Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae)

Casey Parker-Crockett et al.

Summary: Mosquitoes' vector competence for pathogens is influenced by insecticide resistance, particularly with the global use of pyrethroids leading to resistance in species like Aedes aegypti. Different responses to pyrethroids affect susceptibility to arbovirus infection, highlighting the need to consider insecticide resistance in vector control programs during arbovirus transmission.

Impact of deltamethrin-resistance in Aedes albopictus on its fitness cost and vector competence

Jielin Deng et al.

Summary: A laboratory resistant strain of Aedes albopictus was established by deltamethrin insecticide selecting from the laboratory susceptible strain. The resistance prolonged larval development time, shortened adult lifespan, and reduced the vector competence for DENV-2 in resistant mosquitoes.
