The interplay of colour and bioacoustic traits in the differentiation of a Southeast Asian songbird complex

Chyi Yin Gwee et al.

Summary: Morphological traits have long been a key indicator for biologists in species classification, but the integration of behavioural characteristics such as vocalizations in studying biodiversity is gaining importance. This study on a cryptic songbird species in Southeast Asia revealed strong genomic and mitochondrial divergence among different taxa, with complex differences in color-based and bioacoustic traits among populations. Extreme color differences in these birds can be driven by a few specific genomic loci and may evolve rapidly.
