Multi-scale Coupled Processes Modeling of Fractures as Porous, Interfacial and Granular Systems from Rock Images with the Numerical Manifold Method

Mengsu Hu et al.

Summary: This study presents multi-scale modeling capabilities developed based on the numerical manifold method for analyzing coupled hydro-mechanical processes in fractured rocks. Fractures are modeled as continua-finite-thickness porous zones, discontinua-discontinuous interfaces, and microscale asperities and granular systems based on their geometric features. The simulations demonstrate the significant contribution of contact dynamics to geometric, multi-physical evolution in rough fractures systems.

Modeling unsaturated flow in fractured rocks with scaling relationships between hydraulic parameters

Yi-Feng Chen et al.

Summary: Modeling unsaturated flow in fractured rocks is crucial for subsurface engineering applications, but determining the hydraulic properties of rocks with fractures of varying scales is challenging. This study proposes scaling relationships between van Genuchten parameters and hydraulic conductivity derived from soil sample data. These relationships are then used to predict the upper bounds of van Genuchten parameters for fractured rocks based on more easily obtainable field data, and the predictions are validated using data from cores, fractures, and fractured rocks. This methodology allows for more accurate determination of representative values for modeling saturated-unsaturated flow in fractured rocks and has been successfully applied to the modeling of flow behaviors in fractured rocks in a complex hydrogeological condition.

Geochemical Negative Emissions Technologies: Part I. Review

James S. S. Campbell et al.

Summary: This article presents the development and different approaches of geochemical negative emissions technologies (NETs), which utilize alkaline minerals to remove and store atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). These technologies are still in the early stage of development, with only a few undergoing field trials. The article highlights the key features such as mineral resources, processes, kinetics, storage durability, risks, limitations, and the synergies with other technologies like direct air capture (DAC). It also explores the role of biological mechanisms in enhancing geochemical NETs. Part II of the article presents a roadmap to catalyze the research, development, and deployment of geochemical NETs at a gigaton scale in the coming decades.

Secondary magnesite formation from forsterite under CO2 sequestration conditions via coupled heterogeneous nucleation and crystal growth

Carl Steefel et al.

Summary: Flow-only and coupled flow-diffusion experiments were conducted to study the formation of secondary magnesite in micro-capillary tubes, revealing that precipitation was mainly concentrated at the central position in the diffusion-controlled samples. The precipitation rate was influenced by the interfacial free energy and crystal growth rate.

Mesh generation and optimization from digital rock fractures based on neural style transfer

Mengsu Hu et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the use of neural style transfer (NST) to generate mesh from rock fracture images, achieving a good balance between the density of the mesh and the presentation of geometric features through optimizing the cost function. This new approach shows efficient mesh generation and optimization by learning both content and style from the input images.

Geometry and mineral heterogeneity controls on precipitation in fractures: An X-ray micro-tomography and reactive transport modeling study

Catherine Noiriel et al.

Summary: The study investigated the interplay between calcite precipitation, flow, and growth substrate during precipitation, observing that factors such as fracture geometry and flow field reorganization play a significant role in the sealing and precipitation patterns. The research also highlighted the importance of the saturation index of the reactive fluid in influencing the calcite precipitation rate along the flow paths. Additionally, the study found that negative feedback between porosity and permeability decrease affects the reorganization of flow in fractures during precipitation.
