A machine learning approach to identify barriers in stream networks demonstrates high prevalence of unmapped riverine dams

Brian P. Buchanan et al.

Summary: Restoring stream ecosystem integrity by removing unused or derelict dams has become a global priority for watershed conservation. A machine learning approach was developed and tested to identify unmapped dams, revealing that existing dam inventories often underestimate the true number of dams by 80-94%. The machine learning method can provide an accurate and scalable means of identifying unmapped dams, guiding efforts to develop more accurate dam inventories for better management.

Ghosts of landuse past: legacy effects of milldams for riparian nitrogen (N) processing and water quality functions

Shreeram Inamdar et al.

Summary: Milldams and their legacies have significant impacts on fluvial processes and geomorphology, but their effects on riparian nitrogen processing are less understood. The potential effects of existing and breached milldams on riparian nitrogen cycling are uncertain and require further investigation.

Surface water-groundwater exchange dynamics in buried-valley aquifer systems

Corey D. Wallace et al.

Summary: Groundwater, a primary source of drinking water globally, may face quality issues due to excess nutrients and emerging contaminants. Understanding the fate and transport of contaminants in groundwater systems is crucial for successful remediation strategies. High conductivity facies in groundwater systems play a key role in enhancing nutrient and contaminant delivery, particularly during storm events.

Sources and behavior of ammonium during riverbank filtration

Gustavo Covatti et al.

Summary: Ammonium is an undesirable substance in riverbank filtration schemes due to complications in post-treatment. Based on case studies from 40 sites worldwide, sources and behavior of ammonium during RBF were investigated. Typical concentrations of ammonium in bank filtrate range from 0.1 to 1.7 mg/l, with organic nitrogen mineralization in the riverbed being the main source and nitrification in the riverbed being the main sink. Transformations in the riverbed play a critical role in determining ammonium concentrations.

Underlying riparian lithology controls redox dynamics during stage-driven mixing

Corey D. Wallace et al.

Summary: The interactions between surface water-groundwater exchange and sediment lithology influence redox conditions, with high-conductivity sediments taking longer to recover redox potential following storms. The spatial and temporal dynamics of aquifer redox conditions are ultimately governed by sediment lithology.

Dam builders and their works: Beaver influences on the structure and function of river corridor hydrology, geomorphology, biogeochemistry and ecosystems

Annegret Larsen et al.

Summary: Beavers are influential mammalian ecosystem engineers who heavily modify river corridor dynamics through dam construction, affecting hydrology, geomorphology, biogeochemistry, and aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Their impacts include increasing water storage, altering water budgets, enhancing nutrient residence times, and changing habitat complexity and biodiversity.
