Climate Rather Than Vegetation Changes Dominate Changes in Effective Vegetation Available Water Capacity

Meixian Liu et al.

Summary: China has seen significant vegetation greening in recent decades, but its impact on effective vegetation available water capacity (EVAWC) is relatively minor. This study finds that changes in EVAWC over China are mainly influenced by climate variability rather than vegetation changes. This finding is important for understanding the key determinants of ecosystem resilience in China.

Revegetation Does Not Decrease Water Yield in the Loess Plateau of China

Baoqing Zhang et al.

Summary: Revegetation in China's Loess Plateau has led to an increase in surface water yield, despite the enhanced evapotranspiration. This is mainly due to the increase in regional precipitation that outweighs the increase in evapotranspiration. Enhanced land-atmosphere interactions following revegetation have accelerated local moisture recycling and contributed to the increased precipitation. Previous assessments that ignore vegetation-climate feedbacks may have overestimated the threats of revegetation on dryland water resources.

Large-scale reforestation can increase water yield and reduce drought risk for water-insecure regions in the Asia-Pacific

Hoong Chen Teo et al.

Summary: Large-scale reforestation under future climates has both positive and negative impacts on the water cycle. In most water-insecure regions in the Asia-Pacific, reforestation increases evapotranspiration and precipitation, resulting in higher water yield and reduced probability of extreme dry months. However, some regions may experience declines in net water yield due to increased evapotranspiration or decreases in soil moisture and advected precipitation.

Historical Water Storage Changes Over China's Loess Plateau

Rui Shao et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the impact of vegetation restoration on water storage change in the Loess Plateau, China, highlighting that an increase in vegetation coverage can lead to a decrease in water storage. The research emphasizes the importance of considering time scales when ignoring water storage change in water balance analysis.

Root traits explain plant species distributions along climatic gradients yet challenge the nature of ecological trade-offs

Daniel C. Laughlin et al.

Summary: Ecological theory is based on trade-offs in trait differences among species, but unidirectional benefits may be more prevalent than previously thought, with extreme trait values providing advantages in certain environments while a wide range of trait values are equally beneficial in others.
