Adaptive pressure-driven multi-criteria spatial decision-making for a targeted placement of green and grey runoff control infrastructures

Haifeng Jia et al.

Summary: This study developed a multi-criterion decision-making framework for the spatial planning of runoff control infrastructure. By quantifying pressures, states, and responses, the effectiveness of different infrastructures was evaluated and validated through a case study in Wuhan. The results demonstrated the synergy and spatial heterogeneity of multi-perspective pressures, highlighting the suitability of green infrastructures for simultaneous runoff control and ecological improvement.

Multi-objective optimization-based reactive nitrogen transport modeling for the water-environment-agriculture nexus in a basin-scale coastal aquifer

Ziyue Yin et al.

Summary: The quantification of trade-offs between social-economic and environmental effects is of great importance, especially in the semi-arid coastal areas with highly developed agriculture. This study presents an integrated multi-objective simulation-optimization framework to evaluate the basin-scale water-environment-agriculture nexus. The results show that optimizing planting area can achieve a balance between agricultural benefits and environmental objectives.

Connecting microbial, nutrient, physiochemical, and land use variables for the evaluation of water quality within mixed use watersheds

Matthew T. Flood et al.

Summary: The study investigates spatial and temporal trends in microbial contamination in watersheds, finding a significant correlation between the porcine marker and nitrogen and phosphorus species. Relationships were also identified between MST markers and other variables driven by spatial and temporal trends, as well as management practices.

Environmental and economic benefit comparison between coupled grey-green infrastructure system and traditional grey one through a life cycle perspective

Changqing Xu et al.

Summary: The study on the coupled grey and green infrastructure system in a typical residential area in China shows that the construction stage of the coupled system results in higher environmental impacts and economic costs compared to the grey system. However, the operation stage of the coupled system can observe significant environmental and economic benefits, with a payback time of 4 years for related environmental impacts and total economic costs. A current subsidy scheme could reduce the payback time of total economic costs from 3.78 to 1.18 years. This study provides concrete evidence in support of urban stormwater management.

Unexpected River Water Quality Deterioration Due to Stormwater Management in an Urbanizing Watershed

Xiaoyue Zhang et al.

Summary: The study quantified watershed responses to SSM in an urbanizing watershed in China and compared five scenarios. Current SSM design had the greatest negative impact on water quality, while improved SSM design showed significant improvements. Priority management and stricter objectives should be given to urbanizing regions at the watershed scale.

Cyanobacteria cell prediction using interpretable deep learning model with observed, numerical, and sensing data assemblage

JongCheol Pyo et al.

Summary: This study developed a convolutional neural network model to predict cyanobacterial cell concentrations by combining observed data, hyperspectral images, and simulated water quality outputs. The model showed the best performance in predicting seasonal variations of cyanobacteria, with higher efficiency values compared to traditional models.
