Using simple and easy water quality parameters to predict trihalomethane occurrence in tap water

Zeqiong Xu et al.

Summary: Monitoring of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in water supply system is crucial for ensuring the safety of drinking water. This study successfully predicted trihalomethane (THMs) occurrence in tap water using simple water quality parameters, and continuously improved prediction accuracy by adjusting the parameters of radial basis function artificial neural network (RBF ANN) models. Accurate predictions of THMs by RBF ANNs with simple parameters provide an economic and convenient way for THMs monitoring in real water supply system.

In situ remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater by ZVI-PRB and the corresponding indigenous microbial community responses: a field-scale study

Qing Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) successfully reduced hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) concentrations through chemical reduction, impacting the indigenous microbial community structure. Competitive growth among Cr(VI)-reducing bacteria was observed in the PRB area, while Cr(VI)-reducing bacteria were enriched downgradient, indicating further bio-reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). This bio-reduction could serve as a secondary mechanism for prolonged removal of Cr(VI) from groundwater, influenced by environmental factors such as pH, dissolved oxygen, Cr(VI) levels, oxidation-reduction potential, and temperature.

Coupling microscale zero-valent iron and autotrophic hydrogen-bacteria provides a sustainable remediation solution for trichloroethylene-contaminated groundwater: Mechanisms, regulation, and engineering implications

Mengjiao Yuan et al.

Summary: The coupling of microscale zero-valent iron (mZVI) and autotrophic hydrogen bacteria (AHB) has the potential to improve dechlorination performance. This study systematically compared the performances of different systems (mZVI, H-2-AHB, and mZVI-AHB) for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal and optimized the dechlorination and H-2 evolution of mZVI-AHB. The improved dechlorination performance of mZVI-AHB was mainly attributed to efficient utilization of H-2 generated by mZVI corrosion, lasting corrosion of mZVI facilitated by AHB, and enrichment of dechlorination functional bacteria by mZVI.

A comparative study on the physicochemical properties, reactivity and long-term performance of sulfidized nanoscale zerovalent iron synthesized with different kinds of sulfur precursors and procedures in simulated groundwater

Shuangjie Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of sulfur reagents and sulfidation sequence on the properties and performance of S-nZVI in simulated groundwater. The results showed that co-sulfidized S-nZVI had higher reactivity but lost it more rapidly during aging compared to post-sulfidized S-nZVI. S-nZVIpost exhibited superior long-term performance with a degradation rate of trichloroethylene (TCE) remaining at 30%-60% after 90 days of aging. The sulfur precursors affected the selectivity of S-nZVI, but not the degradation pathway of TCE.
