Adsorption and removal of hydroxychloroquine from aqueous media using Algerian kaolin: Full factorial optimisation, kinetic, thermodynamic, and equilibrium studies

Hacene Bendjeffal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using Algerian kaolin as an adsorbent for the removal of hydroxychloroquine from water. The optimal operating parameters were determined, and the adsorption mechanism and isotherm models were validated. The results showed that kaolin was effective in removing hydroxychloroquine.

Suspect screening of wastewaters to trace anti-COVID-19 drugs: Potential adverse effects on aquatic environment

Francesca Cappelli et al.

Summary: During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the provisional use of various drugs for COVID-19 treatment led to the release of pharmaceuticals into the environment through wastewater treatment plants. This study investigated the presence of COVID-19 treatment drugs in three WWTPs in Lombardy, Italy using suspect screening techniques. The results showed a positive correlation between the use of certain drugs and the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths. Additionally, the presence of compounds with ecological concerns was detected in the receiving water bodies.

Removal of Hydroxychloroquine Using Engineered Biochar from Algal Biodiesel Industry Waste: Characterization and Design of Experiment (DoE)

Dilek Gumus et al.

Summary: The study investigated the adsorption of hydroxychloroquine on activated Cystoseira barbata biochar derived from algal biodiesel waste, finding it to be a cost-effective and efficient method for removing HCQ from water. The biochar exhibited high adsorption efficiency, large surface area, and was unaffected by competitive ions in water. The Taguchi experimental design was used for cost optimization of the adsorption process.

Removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) from wastewater using microalgae: A review

Sufia Hena et al.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging micro-pollutants that have harmful effects on living organisms even at low doses. Previous studies have shown their presence in the environment at hazardous levels due to inefficient conventional wastewater treatment plants. Microalgae-mediated treatment offers benefits such as CO2 mitigation during culture and the use of biomass for biodiesel or biofuel production.

The cell wall of green microalgae and its role in heavy metal removal

Olivia Spain et al.

Summary: Heavy metals in industrial wastewaters pose a serious threat to the environment and human health. Microalgae are increasingly being recognized as potential solutions for removing pollutants through biosorption due to their unique cell wall structure. The review focuses on the composition and structure of microalgae cell walls in heavy metal removal, as well as commonly used models to predict the velocity and capacity of biosorption by microalgae.

Occurrence and removal of pharmaceuticals in wastewater treatment plants

Omar Fawzi Suleiman Khasawneh et al.

Summary: This paper systematically reviews the global occurrence and removal of 43 pharmaceutical compounds in municipal wastewater treatment plants from 2010 to 2020, assessing their daily mass load and emissions. Significant variation in pharmaceutical concentrations between regions is found, with higher influent concentrations in Asian regions. Environmental risk assessment shows that 12 monitored pharmaceuticals pose a high potential risk to aquatic ecosystems. Guidelines and regulations are discussed to mitigate pharmaceutical occurrence in the environment.
