The Problem Of The Color Line: Spatial Access To Hospital Services For Minoritized Racial And Ethnic Groups

Jan M. Eberth et al.

Summary: Examining the spatial access to healthcare across different regions is crucial for understanding structural inequalities in the United States. This study found that in rural areas, ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) predominantly inhabited by Black or American Indian/Alaska Native populations were located further away from healthcare services compared to those with a high White population. Conversely, in urban areas, ZCTAs with a high White population were farther from most services. These disparities may result from housing policies that limit opportunities and federal health policies that prioritize service provision over community needs. The study also highlights the limitations of using a single metric, such as distance, to assess healthcare access on a national scale.

Gender differences in commuting travel in the US: interactive effects of race/ethnicity and household structure

Lingqian Hu

Summary: This research explores the interactive effects of household structure and race/ethnicity on gender differences in commuting travel in the United States. It reveals varying impacts of household types across racial/ethnic groups, with particularly large effects in Hispanic people and smaller effects in Black people, while effects in white and Asian people are moderate. These nuanced findings can inform context-sensitive transport policies.

Comparing immigrant commute travel adaptation across and within racial/ethnic groups

Lingqian Hu et al.

Summary: This research investigates differences in the adaptation process of immigrant commute distance and commute mode across and within three racial/ethnic groups in the United States. The study found that immigrant commute behavior eventually converges with that of US-born individuals, but white immigrants show a higher persistence in using non-automobile modes compared to Hispanic immigrants.

Food Deserts: Myth or Reality?

Chen Zhen

Summary: There is little evidence to support the idea that food deserts have a significant causal effect on health and nutrition disparities in low-resourced communities. The disparity in diet quality is more closely related to food demand rather than supply. As a result, policies focused on lowering the relative price of healthy food or changing preferences towards healthy options may be more effective than simply eliminating food deserts.

Travel in the digital age: Vehicle ownership and technology-facilitated accessibility

Evelyn Blumenberg et al.

Summary: Despite the benefits cars provide, technological innovations are changing the dynamics and allowing households to reduce or eliminate their dependence on privately-owned vehicles. The research found a positive relationship between the use of ridehail and carshare services, online shopping, working from home, and the likelihood of zero-vehicle households or having fewer household vehicles than adults. New technology-facilitated activities can help improve access and ease the financial burden of vehicle ownership for households, especially those with travel and financial constraints.

Minority-White income inequality across metropolitan areas: The role of racial/ethnic residential segregation and transportation networks

Joseph Galaskiewicz et al.

Summary: Based on a study of 49 core based statistical areas in the U.S., it was found that Black and Latino incomes are significantly lower than White incomes, especially in areas where they are more segregated. Additionally, efficient transit networks can help improve job accessibility for Black and Latino residents during the morning rush hour, potentially reducing income disparities.
