Role of Globotriaosylceramide in Physiology and Pathology

Ana Beatriz Celi et al.

Summary: At first glance, globoside (Gb) clusters appear to serve as receptors for bacterial toxins, mediating the interaction between host and pathogen. However, further examination reveals that Gb clusters are present on various eukaryotic cell membranes, suggesting a role in physiological regulation and pathological processes. The molecular structure, ligand binding, and intracellular trafficking of Gb may contribute to its widespread functional arrangement.

Therapeutic Strategies to Protect the Central Nervous System against Shiga Toxin from Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli

Jorge Goldstein et al.

Summary: Infection with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli can result in hemorrhagic colitis, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and encephalopathy, with a high mortality rate when the central nervous system is involved. Recent research focuses on inhibiting Stx production and release, preventing Stx transport in the bloodstream, blocking Stx entry into the CNS, inhibiting Stx action in neural cells, and preventing immune system activation and CNS inflammation. Early diagnosis and establishment of CNS biomarkers are crucial for timely neuropharmacological treatment.

The Protein Toxins Ricin and Shiga Toxin as Tools to Explore Cellular Mechanisms of Internalization and Intracellular Transport

Kirsten Sandvig et al.

Summary: Protein toxins can pose threats to human health, but they can also be used to create hybrid toxins against cancer cells. Recent research has shown the powerful utility of these toxins in cell biology studies. Advanced mass spectrometry analysis allows for exploration of lipid species' importance in intracellular transport.
