A Transient-Response methodology based on experiments and modeling for Cu-Redox Half-Cycle kinetic analysis on a Cu-SSZ-13 SCR catalyst

Dhruba J. Deka et al.

Summary: The study developed a transient-response methodology for studying individual SCR Cu-redox half cycles. The methodology allows quantification of various parameters and provides insights into the reaction pathways and activation energies. The results demonstrate that OHC increases faster than RHC with temperature, and RHC limits the SCR process except at the lowest temperature.

Dynamic Binuclear CuII Sites in the Reduction Half-Cycle of Low-Temperature NH3-SCR over Cu-CHA Catalysts

Wenshuo Hu et al.

Summary: Cu-exchanged chabazite zeolite (Cu-CHA) is an efficient catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx, and the dynamic cycling of Cu cations plays an important role in the SCR process. Cu cations are activated by forming Cu-NH3 complexes through reaction with NH3 under low-temperature conditions, and they exhibit homogeneous features in the heterogeneous catalytic process of low-temperature SCR. These features are influenced by electrostatic interactions between Cu cations and conjugate Al centers.

Kinetic Model for the Reduction of CuIISites by NO + NH3 and Reoxidation of NH3-Solvated CuISites by O2and NO in Cu-SSZ-13

Rohil Daya et al.

Summary: In this study, a kinetic model is developed for the reduction and oxidation reactions of Cu sites in Cu-SSZ-13. The rate parameters of these reactions are investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and spatially resolved mass spectrometry. The model is validated with experimental measurements and successfully predicts the formation and consumption of nitrogen oxides. NH3 release is observed during the oxidation reaction at low temperatures, and the presence of NH3 negatively affects the catalyst's activity. This study provides important insights into the reduction and oxidation mechanisms of Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts.

Dynamics of low temperature N2O formation under SCR reaction conditions over a Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst

Yuanzhou Xi et al.

Summary: The study investigates the fundamental characteristics of N2O formation during SCR reactions over a Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst at 200 degrees C, finding that a more oxidized Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst containing higher levels of Cu-oxy species produces more N2O.

Review of Hydrocarbon Poisoning and Deactivation Effects on Cu-Zeolite, Fe-Zeolite, and Vanadium-Based Selective Catalytic Reduction Catalysts for NOx Removal from Lean Exhausts

Federica Gramigni et al.

Summary: Low-temperature operation of NH3-SCR systems poses challenges related to poor catalyst activity and urea injection handling, with unburned hydrocarbons potentially damaging DeNOx catalysts irreversibly. This paper summarizes the effects of HCs on NH3-SCR performance and presents available kinetic models, discussing competitive adsorption, zeolite structure effects, potential surface intermediates, pore blocking, parasitic reactions, and design of improved catalysts with enhanced resistance to hydrocarbon poisoning.

The Role of H+- and Cu+-Sites for N2O Formation during NH3-SCR over Cu-CHA

Yingxin Feng et al.

Summary: The formation of N2O over CHA and Cu-CHA zeolite catalysts during NH3-SCR is found to be connected with NO + NH3 reaction over Cu-sites, rather than direct NH4NO3 decomposition. This finding provides an explanation for the experimentally observed low-temperature N2O formation and the relation between Cu loading and N2O formation. These proposed mechanisms offer strategies to enhance the selectivity to N-2 during NH3-SCR.

Transient Kinetic Analysis of Low-Temperature NH3-SCR over Cu-CHA Catalysts Reveals a Quadratic Dependence of Cu Reduction Rates on CuII

Federica Gramigni et al.

Summary: NO and NH3 can readily reduce CuII at low temperatures according to a 1:1:1:1 stoichiometry over Cu-CHA catalysts. The reduction rates of Cu-II show a quadratic dependence on Cu-II, suggesting a dinuclear-Cu-II mediated RHC pathway. Water significantly inhibits the Cu-II reduction rate in the reaction cascade.

An Overview of Lean Exhaust deNOx Aftertreatment Technologies and NOx Emission Regulations in the European Union

Tommaso Selleri et al.

Summary: This paper reviews recent advances in the management of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from internal combustion engines of light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles, addressing both technical and legal aspects. It focuses on the interaction between new legislation imposing stricter pollutant emission limits and new technologies developed to meet these restrictions. Experimental data shows that new technologies have significantly reduced NOx emissions in Diesel light-duty vehicles over the past 20 years, while increasing emissions of NH3 and N2O.
