Summary: In a study involving middle-aged and elderly individuals, female sex and current smoking were found to be significantly associated with TPO-Ab positivity and detectable levels, while alcohol consumption was associated with lower odds of TPO-Abs. Detectable TPO-Ab levels were linked to increased mortality risk, especially in men.

2021 European Thyroid Association Guidelines for the Management of Iodine-Based Contrast Media-Induced Thyroid Dysfunction

Tomasz Bednarczuk et al.

Summary: ICM can induce thyroid dysfunction, including hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, with a prevalence ranging from 1% to 15%. Prevalence of ICM-induced hyperthyroidism is higher in iodine deficient regions and in patients with nodular goiter or latent Graves' disease, while hypothyroidism is more common in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis. Individualized treatment approaches are debated, and more clinical trials are needed to support decision-making.
