Tuberculosis in the intensive care unit: alternative treatment regimens and association with mortality

Summary: This retrospective cohort study found that mortality was significantly higher among tuberculosis patients requiring intensive care who used alternative treatment regimens (without rifampicin and isoniazid) compared to those using the usual treatment regimen. Factors such as age, albumin levels, and death were independently associated with the use of alternative treatment regimens. Programs for tuberculosis treatment should consider including IV rifampicin, especially for critically ill patients, to potentially improve survival rates.
