On bending crashworthiness of smooth-shell lattice-filled structures

Hanfeng Yin et al.

Summary: The bending crashworthiness of smooth-shell lattice-filled structures is investigated using experiment, numerical simulation and empirical formula in this study. The results show that smooth-shell lattice-filled tubes have better crashworthiness compared to traditional foam-filled tubes. Smooth-shell lattice-filled tubes can be used as excellent energy absorption structures in impact engineering.

Axial crushing of Nylon and Al/Nylon hybrid tubes by FDM 3D printing

Xinrong Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the energy absorption characteristics of Nylon and Al/Nylon hybrid tubes manufactured by 3D printing, finding that Nylon tubes alone are not suitable for energy absorption, while hybrid tubes can avoid adverse effects and show high efficiency. Theoretical expressions are derived to predict mean crushing forces of the hybrid tubes, with predictions matching well with experimental results.

Energy absorption of arched thin-walled structures under transverse loading

Xiong Zhang et al.

Summary: Thin-walled beams are often subjected to transverse or oblique loads in real crash accidents, and their energy absorption capacity under transverse loading is much lower than under axial loading. Arched structures have the potential to convert transverse forces into axial forces, improving the energy absorption and crashworthiness performance of structures significantly.

Modelling of Springback in Tube Bending: A Generalized Analytical Approach

J. Ma et al.

Summary: This research presents a generalized analytical solution for springback in tube bending, enabling accurate and efficient analysis of springback for bending of general tubular materials, in particular, for the tubes with tension-compression asymmetry. By taking the rotary draw bending of high-strength titanium tubes as a case study, the developed analytical model was carefully evaluated, showing its good efficiency for springback prediction - particularly for the large-angle (>= 90 deg.) forming cases.

Effect of end-clamping constraints on bending crashworthiness of square profiles

Quirino Estrada et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of end-clamping constraints to improve the crashworthiness of thin-walled structures and found that the implementation of external clamping pads can achieve the best crush force efficiency. Furthermore, it was observed that assembly force and pad length have significant impacts on energy absorption performance.

Energy absorption of thin walled tube filled with gradient auxetic structures-theory and simulation

Qiang Gao et al.

Summary: Auxetic structures have been utilized in energy absorption applications due to their unique mechanical properties. This study proposes a thin-walled structure filled with a double arrowed auxetic structure and investigates its energy absorption characteristics, with the introduction of gradient configuration to improve performance. A theoretical model is established to predict the energy absorption and validate its accuracy through numerical simulations.

The impact of thermo-mechanical processing routes on product quality in integrated aluminium tube bending process

J. Ma et al.

Summary: This research investigates the impact of thermo-mechanical processing routes on the quality of heat-treatable aluminum tubes in integrated bending processes. The study finds that routes involving bending after solution-heat-treatment can significantly reduce springback and wall-thinning, while naturally-aged tubes may affect the mechanical properties of the products. Moreover, routes with artificial aging can achieve more uniform hardness distribution in the cross-section of bent tubes.
