Structural performance of cold-formed steel built-up section beams under non-uniform bending

Qiu-Yun Li et al.

Summary: This paper presents experimental investigation and numerical analyses on cold-formed steel built-up open and closed section beams under either uniform or non-uniform minor axis bending. The study explores the effect of non-uniform bending on the behaviour of these flexural members. Experimental tests and finite element simulations were conducted to examine the flexural performance of the built-up section members. The results were used to evaluate the appropriateness of the current design rules and recommend modified rules for the design of cold-formed steel built-up section beams.

Experimental and numerical investigation on cold-formed steel built-up section pin-ended columns

Qiu-Yun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the buckling behavior and loading capacity of cold-formed steel (CFS) built-up section members under axial compression through a thorough test program and numerical simulation. The results showed that the current design rules for CFS built-up section members were generally conservative and scattered in predicting resistance, leading to proposed modifications of the codified DSM equations for more reliable strength predictions.

Experimental investigation and design considerations on cold-formed steel built-up I-section columns subjected to interactive buckling modes

Sivaganesh Selvaraj et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental investigation into the behavior of cold-formed steel (CFS) built-up column assembly compressed between fixed ends. The results show that the back-to-back connected doubly symmetric built-up cross-section assembly columns predominantly fail in interactive local and flexural-torsional buckling. The influence of intermediate fastener spacing is also significant in the failure modes of the doubly symmetric CFS built-up columns.

Payam Sarir et al.

Summary: In this study, artificial intelligence techniques were applied to optimize the bearing capacity of concrete-filled steel tube columns. An artificial neural network was used to estimate the bearing capacity values of the columns, and an invasive weed optimization technique was applied to maximize the results. The results showed that the invasive weed optimization technique outperformed the artificial bee colony algorithm in maximizing the bearing capacity of the columns.

A hybrid machine learning approach in prediction and uncertainty quantification of ultimate compressive strength of RCFST columns

Mai Suong T. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This article introduces a machine learning-based approach to estimate the ultimate compressive strength of rectangular concrete-filled steel tube (RCFST) columns and perform an uncertainty quantification. The hybrid model PANN is built and benchmarked against design codes, showing that it is an ideal alternative model for predicting compressive strength. The study proposes the use of Monte Carlo technique to investigate stochastic compressive strength behaviors of RCFST columns and emphasize the systematic consideration of uncertainties in the analysis and design process.
