Three-dimensional progressive damage and failure analysis of double-lap composite bolted joints under quasi-static tensile loading

Jianxia Wang et al.

Summary: A three-dimensional progressive damage model for composite bolted joints under tensile loading was developed and validated. The model considered significant damage phenomena and showed high accuracy in predicting inflection load, failure load, load-displacement response, and failure modes. The study revealed that matrix cracking is the dominant failure mode in these joints.

Load-bearing capacity and failure mechanism of integrated fluted-core composite sandwich cylinders

Haiyang Yang et al.

Summary: Fluted-core sandwich composites offer great potential in lightweight engineering applications. This study designed and fabricated trapezoidal fluted-core sandwich composite cylinders made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics to improve deformation stability. The effects of circumferential cell number and wall thickness on bearing characteristics and failure mechanism were assessed. The results showed that increasing cell number and wall thickness could improve critical local buckling load and enhance specific buckling load.

Binkai Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted experimental and numerical research on the static and fatigue failure of hat-stringer-stiffened composite panels under four-point bending loading. A novel theoretical model was proposed and a numerical method was developed for accurate prediction. The results showed good agreement between predictions and experiments.

An R-curve effect-included delamination growth criterion for mixed-mode I/II delamination predictions of composite laminates

Yu Gong et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel delamination growth criterion considering the significant R-curve effects was proposed for mixed-mode I/II delamination predictions. Its adequacy and accuracy were validated by experimental data for two different composite materials. The proposed criterion is easy to use with only two experimentally obtained parameters.

Effects of debonding defects on the postbuckling and failure behaviors of composite stiffened panel under uniaxial compression

Ruixue Ji et al.

Summary: Research has shown that debonding defects can alter the post-buckling deformation modes and development paths of stiffened panels, leading to varying degrees of deflection and distortion in structures. This can change the failure behaviors and processes of composite laminates, further weakening the ultimate failure strength of the entire composite stiffened panels.

Prediction of net-tension failure of multi-bolt composite joints: A fast approach for laminates with arbitrary layup

Xiaona Peng et al.

Summary: A new fast approach based on finite fracture mechanics and finite element methods was developed to predict the net-tension failure strength of multi-bolt composite joints. The method efficiently calculates stress distribution and stress intensity factor, which can address different problems and validate the results through comparison with test data.

Effect of environment conditioning on mode II fracture behaviour of adhesively bonded joints

S. Abdel-Monsef et al.

Summary: The experimental study found that environmental conditions and temperature have a significant impact on the fracture behavior of adhesively bonded joints, with long aging times leading to decreased fracture toughness, high temperatures increasing toughness, and low temperatures increasing the brittleness of the adhesive.

Failure prediction of irregular arranged multi-bolt composite repair based on finite fracture mechanics model

Xiang Li et al.

Summary: A numerical method based on the finite fracture mechanics model was proposed in this study for accurately predicting the failure of bolted composite repairs. Through a two-stage analysis strategy, the computational cost was reduced while maintaining high accuracy. Experimental validation demonstrated the effectiveness and applicability of the numerical method in predicting the failure behavior of bolted composite repairs.

Experimental analysis of mode I crack propagation in adhesively bonded joints by optical backscatter reflectometry and comparison with digital image correlation

R. A. A. Lima et al.

Summary: In this study, the relationship between Optical Backscatter Reflectometry-based backface strain sensing and adhesive damage was investigated using double cantilever beam specimens. It was found that backface strain sensing allowed for the identification of plastic deformations ahead of the crack-tip, which opens up new possibilities for fatigue crack monitoring and in-service measurements.

A parametric study on static behavior and load sharing of multi-bolt hybrid bonded/bolted composite joints

Valentin S. Romanov et al.

Summary: The combination of bonding and bolting in a hybrid joint can result in a stronger and more durable joint. The overlap length of the joint significantly influences its strength, while the positioning of the bolts has a less pronounced impact. Joint stiffness is mainly governed by the overlap length, and load sharing between adhesive and bolts is geometry-dependent.

A Two-Dimensional Model for Pin-Load Distribution and Failure Analysis of Composite Bolted Joints

Binkai Li et al.

Summary: A two-dimensional model of multibolt composite joints was established for pin-load distribution analysis. Experimental results and a 3D finite element model were used to validate its accuracy in predicting failure. FE models were then used to predict failure in laminated plates with three-row fastener joints, using Hashin stress criteria and degradation guidelines for material stiffness proposed by Tserpes. The model effectively predicted failure location and ultimate load, further validating its applicability in pin-load distribution analysis.
