Evaluation of fracture behavior of high-strength hydraulic concrete damaged by freeze-thaw cycle test

Xiangyi Zhu et al.

Summary: Hydraulic concrete structures in cold regions are prone to freeze-thaw damage, diminishing the fracture characteristics of concrete beams. Experimental and DEM simulation analyses reveal that the number of freeze-thaw cycles is linearly related to the decreasing trend in elastic modulus, critical crack length, fracture toughness, fracture energy, and critical crack tip opening displacement. Additionally, the evolution of internal cracks in freeze-thaw damaged concrete beams under three-point flexural loads is studied using DIC and AE techniques. Based on experimental research, a fracture model considering real aggregates and the influence of freeze-thaw damage parameters is established and accurately predicts the fracture behavior of concrete beams subjected to different freeze-thaw cycles.
