Assessment of learning curve and oncologic feasibility of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy: A propensity score-based comparison with open approach

Hyeyeon Kim et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 70 cases of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (R-PD) and compared the results with 269 cases of open pancreaticoduodenectomy (O-PD). The results showed that the surgical outcomes of R-PD improved over time, but there were differences compared to O-PD in certain aspects.

Multicenter comparison of totally laparoscopic and totally robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy: Propensity score and learning curve-matching analyses

Hyeyeon Kim et al.

Summary: The study compared the perioperative outcomes of laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) and robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD), finding that RPD had advantages of shorter operative and hospital stay times, and lower open conversion rate. Both surgery types showed comparable results in postoperative complications.

Learning Curve in Laparoscopic Pancreaticoduodenectomy: Using Risk-Adjusted Cumulative Summation Methods

Hanbaro Kim et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the learning curve of a single surgeon who conducted 115 LPDs, revealing three distinct phases with improvements in operative time, blood loss rate, conversion rate, and complication rates as the phases progressed. The LPD failure rate plateaued after 42 cases and stabilized after 73 cases.

Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy reduces incidence of clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula in soft pancreas with a smaller than 2 mm pancreatic duct

Seung Soo Hong et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the safety and feasibility of laparoscopic duct-to-mucosa pancreaticojejunostomy and compared perioperative outcomes of laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) and open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD) in patients with soft pancreas and small pancreatic duct. LPD group showed significantly reduced clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula (CR-POPF) rates compared to the OPD group, especially in high-risk patients.

Summary: After the learning curve of LPD surgery, LPD performed by experienced surgeons is safe and effective. Compared to OPD, the postoperative length of stay is shorter for LPD patients, and the incidence rate of serious postoperative morbidities and mortality rates are similar.
