Current Barriers in Robotic Surgery Training for General Surgery Residents

Summary: Recent trends have seen a rise in robotic-assisted operations in visceral surgery, including in the challenging fields of hepatic, pancreatic, and esophageal surgery. While the advantages of laparoscopic surgery over open surgery are also applicable to robotic surgery, the latter comes with additional benefits such as a 3D-view camera, wristed instruments, and ergonomic consoles. However, the use of robotic systems can lead to longer operating times and higher costs, and randomized controlled trials comparing robotic and laparoscopic approaches are still lacking. Further studies are needed to validate the promising results of robotic systems in advanced surgical procedures.
