Hepatocellular carcinoma

Josep M. Llovet et al.

Summary: Liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), poses a significant global health challenge with rising incidence projected to exceed 1 million cases by 2025. Infection by hepatitis B and C viruses remains a major risk factor for HCC, while non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is emerging as a more common risk factor in Western countries. Advances in systemic therapies for HCC, including immunotherapies and targeted therapies, are expected to revolutionize the management of this disease.

Development and validation of a novel online calculator for estimating survival benefit of adjuvant transcatheter arterial chemoembolization in patients undergoing surgery for hepatocellular carcinoma

Lei Liang et al.

Summary: This study constructed an online calculator for assessing the survival benefit of adjuvant TACE for patients with resected HCC based on large-scale real-world data. By incorporating existing independent survival predictors, two prediction models were successfully developed and showed good calibration and discrimination.

Long-term oncologic outcomes of liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma in adolescents and young adults: A multicenter study from a hepatitis B virus-endemic area

Yong-Kang Diao et al.

Summary: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in areas with endemic hepatitis B virus infection are more likely to develop hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). After undergoing HCC resection, AYAs have a higher risk of recurrence than older adults, indicating a need for enhanced surveillance for postoperative recurrence among AYAs.

Association of Postoperative Biomarker Response with Recurrence and Survival in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma and High Alpha-Fetoprotein Expressions (>400 ng/ml)

Lei Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigated long-term recurrence and survival after hepatectomy for high-AFP HCC, finding that postoperative incomplete biomarker response was the strongest risk factor for predicting poor overall survival and recurrence-free survival in these patients.

Comparison of surgical outcomes for laparoscopic liver resection of large hepatocellular carcinomas: A retrospective observation from single-center experience

Summary: This study compared the surgical outcomes of open hepatectomy with laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) for large hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs), finding that LLR resulted in less blood loss and shorter hospital stay than open hepatectomy for large HCCs, with no significant differences in complications, mortality rates, and long-term survival rates between the two groups.
