Microstructure, Mechanical and Tribological Properties of Advanced Layered WN/MeN (Me = Zr, Cr, Mo, Nb) Nanocomposite Coatings

Kateryna Smyrnova et al.

Summary: This work investigates the microstructure, phase composition, mechanical and tribological properties of WN-based nanocomposite multilayers with a second MeN (Me = Zr, Cr, Mo, Nb) layer. WN/MoN multilayers were studied for the first time using cathodic-arc physical vapor deposition (CA-PVD). First-principles calculations were also performed to gain more insight into the properties of the deposited multilayers. Among the four studied systems, WN/NbN showed the best performance as a protective coating in challenging conditions.

Exploring Nanoscale Lubrication Mechanisms of Multilayer MoS2 During Sliding: The Effect of Humidity

Victor E. P. Claerbout et al.

Summary: Solid lubricants, particularly molybdenum disulfide, have excellent frictional properties but are affected by humidity. This study used nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the frictional properties of multilayer MoS2 sliding in water, revealing an energy-driven, rotational dependence of the water network and identifying three distinct frictional regimes based on water coverage. The results highlight the complex interactions between water and MoS2 in affecting friction behavior.
