Progress and Future Prospects of Wide-Bandgap Metal-Compound-Based Passivating Contacts for Silicon Solar Cells

Kun Gao et al.

Summary: This article reviews the fundamentals and development status of dopant-free passivating contacts (DFPCs) based on metal compounds, and discusses the challenges and potential solutions for enhancing carrier selectivity. By adjusting the carrier concentration and work function of the metal compound, high power conversion efficiencies over 26% can be achieved for c-Si solar cells with DFPCs.

Excellent Passivation of n-Type Silicon Surfaces Enabled by Pulsed-Flow Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition of Phosphorus Oxide Capped by Aluminum Oxide

Jimmy Melskens et al.

Summary: A fast pulsed-flow PECVD process for POx layer deposition has been introduced, maintaining high-quality POx/Al2O3 surface passivation. It is suitable for n-type silicon solar cells, providing excellent surface passivation with high positive fixed charge density and ultralow interface defect density.

Excellent surface passivation of germanium by a-Si:H/Al2O3 stacks

Wilhelmus J. H. (Willem-Jan) Berghuis et al.

Summary: Surface passivation of germanium is crucial for Ge based optoelectronic devices, and a stack of a-Si:H and Al2O3 layers was investigated for this purpose; Different deposition processes were used for a-Si:H and Al2O3 films, with the plasma-enhanced ALD process for Al2O3 showing superior performance; A high negative fixed charge density was achieved, resulting in low surface recombination velocity, making this passivation stack promising for applications like solar cells and nanolasers using p-type Ge.

Atomic-layer-deposited Al-doped zinc oxide as a passivating conductive contacting layer for n plus -doped surfaces in silicon solar cells

Bart Macco et al.

Summary: Research has shown that stacks consisting of ultrathin SiO2 coated with ALD ZnO and Al2O3 provide state-of-the-art passivation for n-type crystalline silicon surfaces and additional functionalities for silicon solar cells. The Al2O3 capping layer is crucial in the passivation mechanism, while annealing can significantly improve the transparency and lateral conductivity of ZnO.
