Acid rain reduces soil CO2 emission and promotes soil organic carbon accumulation in association with decreasing the biomass and biological activity of ecosystems: A meta-analysis

Ziqiang Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that acid rain significantly reduced soil CO2 emissions but marginally increased soil N2O emissions. Additionally, acid rain led to changes in soil microbial biomass and activity, as well as reductions in aboveground and fine root biomass of vegetation.

Diversity-stability relationships in temperate grasslands as a function of soil pH

Kai Liu et al.

Summary: The diversity-stability relationships in grasslands are influenced by environmental factors and changes in soil pH. This study found that altered soil pH had negative impacts on community biodiversity and stability, especially in desert grasslands. Soil acidification and alkalization reduced community stability in desert and typical grasslands, respectively. However, altered soil pH did not affect community stability in meadow grasslands. The study also revealed that changes in soil nutrients, mediated by soil acidification and alkalization, were associated with species asynchrony and indirectly influenced community stability.

Significant soil acidification caused by grazing exclusion across China's grassland areas

Jiangtao Hong et al.

Summary: Grazing exclusion results in significant soil acidification, especially in surface soils and humid areas. The changes in soil pH are most pronounced during medium-term periods, while smaller rates of change are observed over short- and long-term periods.

Aridity stimulates responses of root production and turnover to warming but suppresses the responses to nitrogen addition in temperate grasslands of northern China

Chuang Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of warming and N addition on root traits in different grassland ecosystems along an aridity gradient in northern China. Results showed that warming increased root-shoot ratio in dry years but decreased root production and turnover in all grasslands, while N addition had varying effects on root traits depending on the grassland type and aridity level. Overall, warming and N addition had different impacts on root traits in the studied grasslands.

Mutualism disruption by an invasive ant reduces carbon fixation for a foundational East African ant-plant

Patrick D. Milligan et al.

Summary: The study in East Africa showed that the invasion of Pheidole megacephala ants led to a significant decrease in photosynthesis of Acacia drepanolobium trees, with an interaction between invasive ants and large herbivores causing further declines in leaf- and canopy-level photosynthesis. The results suggest the potential of invasive species to alter ecosystem-level carbon fixation and other biogeochemical cycles.

Latitudinal patterns of terrestrial phosphorus limitation over the globe

Enqing Hou et al.

Summary: This study examined the global-scale latitudinal pattern of terrestrial phosphorus limitation by analyzing plant production responses to phosphorus additions at various sites worldwide. The observed phosphorus-addition effect varied greatly depending on fertilization regime and production measure, but the standardised effect was consistently positive and decreased significantly with latitude. The latitudinal gradient in the standardised phosphorus-addition effect was explained by various mechanisms involving substrate age, climate, vegetation type, edaphic properties, and biochemical machinery.

Forest soil acidification consistently reduces litter decomposition irrespective of nutrient availability and litter type

Ying Shen et al.

Summary: This study found that acid addition consistently reduced litter decomposition rate, regardless of nutrient addition or litter types. Soil acidification in temperate forests was shown to decelerate litter decomposition independently of soil nutrient availability and litter types. In the future, intensifying soil acidification due to continuous nitrogen deposition may lead to a reduction in litter nutrient return to soil, potentially causing multiple soil nutrient limitations.

A multi-scale daily SPEI dataset for drought characterization at observation stations over mainland China from 1961 to 2018

Qianfeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study developed a daily SPEI dataset for monitoring and assessing drought characteristics, applicable to various timescales of meteorological, agricultural, hydrological, and socioeconomic drought. Results showed no significant intensifying trends in severity, duration, and frequency of drought events in mainland China from 1961 to 2018.
