Photoprogrammable Moisture-Responsive Actuation of a Shape Memory Polymer Film

Jieying Xue et al.

Summary: This study reports on a method to achieve programmable humidity-responsive actuating behaviors by introducing photoprogrammable hygroscopic patterns into shape memory polymers. The researchers found that by treating the polymer surface to form an Fe3+-carboxylate coordinating network, transient hygroscopic gradients can be generated under UV light, driving the deformation of the polymer. Furthermore, the shape memory effect can be effectively used to adjust the direction and amplitude of the moisture-driven actuating behavior.

A Variable Stiffness Magnetic Catheter Made of a Conductive Phase-Change Polymer for Minimally Invasive Surgery

Yegor Piskarev et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new type of variable stiffness magnetic catheter, using a conductive shape memory polymer to make variable stiffness lines, which are non-toxic, serve as heaters, temperature sensors, and variable stiffness substrates, etc., through a new scalable manufacturing process. Through the external magnetic field, selective bending of a multisegmented VST catheter with a diameter of 2.0mm is demonstrated, with lower wall thickness and outer diameter, achieving up to 51 degrees of bending and exhibiting a stiffness change factor of 21.

Electro-thermo-mechanical behavior of carbon nanopaper shape memory polymer composites

Veli Bugra Ozdemir et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an electro-active composite based on carbon nanopaper shape memory polymer for actuating deployment of composite deployable structures, and conducts experimental, numerical, and analytical studies on shape programming, stowage, and actuation characteristics. The research investigates the shape change behavior of the composite under different loading conditions, and establishes a close correlation between experimental measurements and numerical simulations. The proposed model accurately predicts the load and shape characteristics throughout programming, stowage, and actuation processes.
