Electrochemical Reduction of Nitrogen to Ammonia by Pd-S-Mo Nanosheets on a Hydrophobic Hierarchical Graphene Support

Wuyong Zhang et al.

Summary: This work introduces [Mo3S13] (2-) clusters onto 2D-structured Pd nanosheets to create Pd-S-Mo nanosheets with abundant Mo active sites for N-2 activation. The loading of Pd-S-Mo nanosheets on both hydrophilic and hydrophobic supports successfully improves the Faradaic efficiency and ammonia yield. This study provides a design principle for efficient ENRR electrocatalysts by engineering Mo active sites and catalyst supports.

Coadsorption of NRR and HER Intermediates Determines the Performance of Ru-N4 toward Electrocatalytic N2 Reduction

Tongwei Wu et al.

Summary: This study unveils the mechanism, thermodynamics, and kinetics determining the HER/NRR efficiency on the state-of-the-art NRR electrocatalyst, Ru-N-4. The results show that NRR intermediates suppress HER through coadsorption on the catalyst, and the selectivity is determined by the initial step forming *NNH or *H. This provides crucial insights into the complex NRR/HER competition and suggests ways to improve NRR selectivity.

Overcoming Nitrogen Reduction to Ammonia Detection Challenges: The Case for Leapfrogging to Gas Diffusion Electrode Platforms

Martin Kolen et al.

Summary: This article presents a potential solution to the detection challenges in ammonia production by proposing the use of a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) cell design as a catalyst testing platform. By switching to the GDE cell design, the cost of crucial experiments can be reduced and the loss of NRR selectivity due to the inevitable drop in mass transport at low flow rates can be avoided.

Understanding potential-dependent competition between electrocatalytic dinitrogen and proton reduction reactions

Changhyeok Choi et al.

Summary: The study investigates the potential-dependent competition between electrochemical NRR and HER, revealing that the crossover of H coverage and N-2 coverage leads to the premature decrease of NRR activity. The larger charge transfer in H+ adsorption poses a fundamental challenge to practical electrochemical NRR, and several strategies are suggested to overcome this challenge.
