Li Wang et al.

Summary: This study seeks an electrochemical catalyst for the liquid-to-solid conversion of soluble lithium polysulfides in lithium-sulfur batteries. The use of Mn-based mullite catalyst enhances the performance of the sulfur redox reaction and inhibits the shuttle effect. Theoretical calculations and experimental results demonstrate the effective coupling between the catalyst and polysulfides, leading to improved cycling stability and areal capacity in the Li-S battery.

Interlayer environment engineered MXene: Pre-intercalated Zn2+ ions as intercalants renders the modulated Li storage

Yixuan Wang et al.

Summary: Intercalation of Zn2+ ions into MXene resulted in shrinkage of adjacent MXene layers and increased Li+ storage capacity. The Zn2+ ions lost electrons while Ti in MXene gained electrons, and low-F surface functional groups were formed. After a certain number of cycles, the interlayer distance increased, promoting ion transport and providing a larger space for lithium storage.

Spinel-type bimetal sulfides derived from Prussian blue analogues as efficient polysulfides mediators for lithium-sulfur batteries

Ruijian Li et al.

Summary: Lithium-sulfur batteries have attracted increasing attention for their high energy density in advanced energy storage systems. However, their practical application is hindered by poor cycling stability due to the inherent polysulfide shuttle. Recent efforts have focused on using polar hosts to interact with polysulfide intermediates, but the low electrical conductivity of these hosts limits specific capacity. A new spinel-type bimetal sulfide NiCo2S4 has been reported as a novel host for polysulfide, enabling high-performance sulfur cathodes with improved efficiency and minimal capacity decay.

Boosting Catalytic Activity by Seeding Nanocatalysts onto Interlayers to Inhibit Polysulfide Shuttling in Li-S Batteries

Jingyi Xia et al.

Summary: The use of in situ synthesized ultrasmall vanadium nitride nanoparticles dispersed on porous nitrogen-doped graphene as a catalytic interlayer effectively addresses the shuttle effect caused by soluble lithium polysulfides in Li-S batteries. The ultrasmall size of the vanadium nitride particles provides ample triple-phase interfaces for accelerating LiPS conversion and Li2S deposition, resulting in reduced accumulation of LiPS in the electrolyte and inhibition of the shuttle effect. This approach demonstrates high catalytic activity, as evidenced by a significantly reduced activation energy for Li2S4 conversion and a detected decrease in the shuttle effect, thus leading to outstanding cycling performance and high capacity retention in Li-S batteries.
