Synthesized cationic starch grafted tannin as a novel flocculant for efficient microalgae harvesting

Yaohui You et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel tannin-based flocculant (TCCs) was synthesized and successfully grafted onto cationic starch-based flocculants (CCs). Various analyses confirmed the grafting of tannin onto the CCs skeleton. TCCs exhibited excellent harvesting performance at low dosages and had better reflocculation ability. The introduction of tannin allowed TCCs to combine with specific proteins and form compact flocs, leading to dosage savings and improved harvesting efficiency.

Understanding the synergistic mechanism of PAM-FeCl3 for improved sludge dewaterability

Lixin Li et al.

Summary: PAM-FeCl3 conditioning can enhance sludge dewaterability by neutralizing the negative charges on sludge particles, increasing sludge floc size, and forming a rough and porous floc structure. This process also effectively disintegrates EPS fractions, decomposes aromatic protein-like substances, and improves sludge dewatering performance.

Efficient removal of both positively and negatively charged colloidal contaminants using amphoteric starch-based flocculants synthesized by low-pressure UV initiation

Yuyang Wu et al.

Summary: Surface charges of the suspended colloidal particles in water can be either positive or negative. A series of amphoteric starch-based flocculants were successfully synthesized and used for the removal of contaminants with different charges from water. The results showed that these eco-friendly flocculants exhibited high flocculation performance for both kaolin and hematite suspensions.

Treasuring industrial sulfur by-products: A review on add-value to reductive sulfide and sulfite for contaminant removal and hydrogen production

Guanshu Zhao et al.

Summary: This study critically reviews recent advances in the removal and utilization of reductive sulfur-containing by-products (S-BPs) from industrial processes for efficient contaminant removal and hydrogen production. Sulfide acts as both reductant and nucleophile, promoting the catalytic reduction process for contaminant removal. Sulfite-assisted catalytic processes can generate reductive active species, leading to efficient reduction removal of contaminants. Sulfides and sulfites can also be removed and hydrogen can be produced through photocatalytic and electrocatalytic processes.

Coagulation-flocculation performance and floc properties of composite bioflocculant PAFC-CBF in treating the surface water

Lixin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the coagulation-flocculation behavior and floc properties of composite bioflocculant (PAFC-CBF) for treating low turbidity surface water. The results showed that PAFC-CBF significantly improved turbidity removal efficiency, UV254 and TOC removal compared to PAFC alone. Furthermore, the study revealed the influence of mass ratios and pH on the [Al+Fe] species in PAFC-CBF. CBF contributed to the increased growth rate and size of flocs. PAFC-CBF formed denser and more porous flocs with higher recovery factor, enabling easy recovery and re-growth after breakage. The coagulation-flocculation synergistic effect of PAFC-CBF was achieved through adsorption charge neutralization and adsorption bridging.
