Effective photocatalytic degradation of sulfamethoxazole using tunable CaCu3Ti4O7 perovskite

En Lien et al.

Summary: Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a widely used antibiotic, has raised concerns over the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment. This study investigated the use of perovskite-type photocatalysts for the removal of SMX. The CaCu3Ti4O7 (CCTO) perovskites showed excellent degradation efficiency under UV-light irradiation, with the addition of NaBr electrolytes further enhancing the removal rate. The study suggests that the inexpensive and environmentally benign CCTO perovskite photocatalyst can be applied for the treatment of emerging contaminants in the future.

MIL-100(Fe)@GO composites with superior adsorptive removal of cationic and anionic dyes from aqueous solutions

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: The separation of synthetic dyes from industrial wastewaters is crucial for addressing water pollution. This study focuses on synthesizing new adsorbent materials, specifically MIL-100(Fe)@GO composites, with superior adsorption efficiency. The composites show excellent adsorption performance for various pollutant dyes, surpassing the values reported for pristine MIL-100(Fe). The adsorption behavior of the composites is determined by their structural and morphological characteristics, as well as by the properties of the dyes.

Cerium-based UiO-66 metal-organic framework for synergistic dye adsorption and photodegradation: A discussion of the mechanism

Danxia Zhao et al.

Summary: The recently developed Ce-UiO-66 exhibits significantly enhanced adsorption and photocatalytic performance for removing both cationic and anionic dyes, surpassing the common Zr-UiO-66. The red-shifted light absorption range of Ce-UiO-66 allows for potential utilization of visible light energy, while its unique charge transfer energy accelerates electron-hole pair separation, leading to effective photolysis of organic dyes. Overall, Ce-UiO-66 presents a promising approach for wastewater treatment with excellent adsorption and photocatalytic activity.

Xiuzhen Wei et al.

Summary: Nanofiltration membranes, especially positively charged hollow fiber NF membranes (PEI-NF), show potential for removing pharmaceuticals and organic pollutants from water. The rejection mechanisms of the PEI-NF membrane include electrostatic repulsion, steric hindrance, size sieving effect, and hydration-induced size increase. The molecular structure and diffusion coefficient of pharmaceutical molecules also play a role in their rejection by the membrane.

Degradation of sulfamethoxazole by the heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction between gallic acid and ferrihydrite

Yu Huang et al.

Summary: The presence of phenolic acids, iron oxides, and dissolved oxygen in soils can initiate a Fenton-like reaction with potential impact on organic pollutant transformation. This reaction, involving species like semiquinone free radicals and hydroxyl radicals, was shown to degrade sulfamethoxazole efficiently at pH 4.0, while pH increase inhibited the process. The study also identified intermediate products and pathways for SMX degradation, enhancing understanding of abiotic soil Fenton-like reactions on pollutant fate.
