Novel thin-film composite membrane with polydopamine-modified polyethylene support and tannic acid-Fe3+ interlayer for forward osmosis applications

Fangkun Xiao et al.

Summary: A novel thin-film composite (TFC) membrane for forward osmosis (FO) was fabricated by introducing a tannic acid (TA)-Fe3+ interlayer on a polydopamine (PDA)-modified polyethylene (PE) support. The unique wormlike morphology of the polyamide (PA) layer in the membrane increased water flux and reduced salt flux, overcoming the trade-off between permeability and selectivity. The TA-Fe3+ interlayer enhanced the adhesion strength between PA layer and PDA-modified PE support, resulting in excellent stability of the TFC membrane for FO applications.

Brine management from desalination plants for salt production utilizing high current density electrodialysis-evaporator hybrid system: A case study in Kuwait

Bader S. Al-Anzi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the potential of producing salt and low salinity water from synthetic brine using a pilot-scale electrodialysis-evaporator hybrid system for brine management. An electrodialyzer with monovalent selective membranes efficiently separated monovalent ions over divalent ions. Higher current density and flowrate were favored for shorter operation time, reduced energy consumption, and increased current efficiency. The concentrated brine effluent from electrodialysis was fed to an evaporator to produce coarse salt and low salinity water, making the hybrid system a good option for brine treatment.

Ionic Transport and Sieving Properties of Sub-nanoporous Polymer Membranes with Tunable Channel Size

Yaxiong Cheng et al.

Summary: A convenient method is reported to introduce ionic selective channels in micron-thick polycarbonate membranes through swift heavy ion irradiation, UV sensitization, and pulsed-electrical etching, tuning the characteristic dimensions of the channels for subnanoporous membranes with excellent ionic separation and sieving properties. The study found that the transmembrane conduction of multivalent ions was suppressed compared to monovalent ions until the size of the membrane channel matched the hydrated diameter of multivalent ions, showing high selectivity for various ions and channel diameters.

Permselectivity of Cation Exchange Membranes Modified by Polyaniline

Irina Falina et al.

Summary: This research discusses the applicability of polyaniline-modified cation exchange membranes in electrodialysis for separating monovalent/divalent cations. A novel method of membrane modification directly in the electrodialysis unit was used to prepare permselective membranes, with complex characterization revealing the influence of membrane matrix on modification efficiency. Competitive mass transfer of singly and doubly charged cations in various current regimes was studied, showing an increase in membrane permselectivity to singly charged cations due to repulsion of Ca2+ ions from the positively charged membrane surface.
