Adsorptive removal of synthetic plastic components bisphenol-A and solvent black-3 dye from single and binary solutions using pristine pinecone biochar

Ranjit Gurav et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the adsorptive removal of bisphenol-A and solvent black-3 from single and binary solutions. The results show that the pristine pinecone biochar produced at 750 ? demonstrated greater removal of bisphenol-A. The experimental data was best fitted to the Elovich and pseudo-second-order kinetic models for single-component and binary solution, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm model showed the highest regression coefficient values and adsorption capacity for both bisphenol-A and dye removal.

Phytoremediation of a pyrene-contaminated soil by Cannabis sativa L. at different initial pyrene concentrations

Ilaria Gabriele et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of Cannabis sativa L. for the phytoremediation of PYR-contaminated soil. The results showed that the highest PYR removal rate achieved by hemp was approximately 95%, which was 35% higher compared to the unplanted control. The initial PYR concentration affected the growth and phytoremediation potential of C. sativa L., with lower initial concentrations resulting in higher PYR removal. The interaction between plant roots and rhizosphere microorganisms may play a role in PYR removal.

Sorption mechanisms of diethyl phthalate by nutshell biochar derived at different pyrolysis temperature

Xinhui Fan et al.

Summary: The sorption properties of diethyl phthalate (DEP) by biochar samples derived from different nutshell sources at different pyrolysis temperatures were investigated. The results showed that lower temperature biochar exhibited stronger sorption intensity due to specific interactions between polar functional groups and DEP molecules, while higher temperature biochar had stronger sorption driven by surface adsorption. Peanut shell derived-biochar showed promising potential for remediation of DEP in the environment.

The addition of biochar as a sustainable strategy for the remediation of PAH-contaminated sediments

Francesco Bianco et al.

Summary: Biochar is proposed as an innovative and sustainable technology for remediation of PAH-contaminated sediments, mainly through sorption mechanisms. The use of biochar can significantly improve the efficiency of PAH removal from sediments, especially when used in combination with multi-PAH systems and high dosages. Additionally, biochar has shown to decrease PAH degradation during bioaugmentation and phytoremediation of sediments, but can increase degradation when used with nitrate as an electron acceptor in low-temperature conditions.

Comparison of adsorption behaviors and mechanisms of methylene blue, Cd2+, and phenanthrene by modified biochars derived from pomelo peel

Baoqing Li et al.

Summary: Biochar has been widely used for adsorption of pollutants in the environment, but structural defects limit its efficiency. This study prepared oxidized and sulfhydryl biochar from pomelo peel and found that sulfhydryl biochar had higher adsorption capacities for methylene blue, Cd2+, and phenanthrene, demonstrating greater flexibility and efficiency in pollutant removal. The study also showed that adsorption mechanisms were closely related to biochar structure and pollutant properties, highlighting the importance of regulating microstructure and interfacial properties for enhanced adsorption behaviors of biochar.

Lijian Leng et al.

Summary: Surface area and porosity are crucial physical properties of biochar that significantly impact its applications, with biomass composition and pyrolysis temperature being major influencing factors. Activation, particularly through chemical means, is the most effective way to enhance biochar surface area and porosity, while other treatment methods like carbonaceous materials coating and ball milling can also contribute to improvement. Future research should focus on developing treatment technologies to simultaneously enhance the functionality and porous structure of biochar.
