Biochar co-doped with nitrogen and boron switching the free radical based peroxydisulfate activation into the electron-transfer dominated nonradical process

Jibo Dou et al.

Summary: In this study, N/B co-doped biochars were used as metal-free activators of peroxydisulfate (PDS) for tetracycline degradation, and the roles of dopants as well as the relative contribution of radical vs nonradical oxidations were comprehensively investigated. The findings demonstrated that co-doping N and B into biochars not only enhanced catalytic activity, but also shifted the PDS-activated process from radical to electron transfer-dominated nonradical pathway. The study provided new insights into the critical role of heteroatom-doped carbocatalysts in PDS nonradical activation.

Comparative study on bisphenols oxidation via TiO2 photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate: Effectiveness, mechanism and pathways

Jialin Jia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol AF (BPAF), and bisphenol S (BPS) by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with TiO2 nano-tubes arrays (TiO2NTAs) under simulated sunlight irradiation for the first time. The results showed different reactive species played a dominant role in the oxidation process of BPF, BPAF, and BPS, with acidic conditions favoring their degradation. Common degradation pathways and specific degradation pathways were identified through the analysis of oxidation intermediates for the three bisphenols.

Peroxydisulfate Activation and Singlet Oxygen Generation by Oxygen Vacancy for Degradation of Contaminants

Yongguang Bu et al.

Summary: This study presents a mechanism of PDS activation over OV-rich BiOBr samples, where a nonradical mechanism mediated by O-1(2) is utilized for BPA degradation. The surface OVs of BiOBr provide ideal sites for the inclusion of hydroxyl ions, leading to the formation of Bi-III-OH species that act as active sites for PDS activation. This work offers a novel perspective for the activation of peroxides by defective materials without additional energy supply or aqueous transition metal ions.

Xiangyu Chen et al.

Summary: By establishing a collaborative system involving PMS activation in a photocatalytic fuel cell with a BiOI/TiO2 nanotube arrays p-n type heterojunction as photoanode under visible light, a significantly higher degradation rate of BZF was achieved compared to a single PFC system. Radical quenching experiments and EPR tests revealed the contribution of different reactive oxidative species and the mechanism of PMS interaction with the photoinduced holes and electrons. The improved power generation efficiency and proposed pathways for BZF degradation provide new insights into PMS-assisted photocatalysis and energy recovery mechanisms.
