Novel insights in dimethyl carbonate-based extraction of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB)

Beatrice Mongili et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of DMC for PHB extraction, and investigates different experimental conditions to optimize extraction performance. Comparisons between PHB extracted using DMC and chloroform show that DMC/ethanol is a more environmentally friendly and health-conscious choice.

A novel strategy for improving volatile fatty acid purity, phosphorus removal efficiency, and fermented sludge dewaterability during waste activated sludge fermentation

Yun Chen et al.

Summary: A novel strategy of initiating fermentation at a pH of 10 was developed to improve VFA purity, P removal efficiency, and fermented sludge dewaterability during WAS fermentation. Despite lower VFAs concentration in RIA compared to RDC, the purity of VFAs in the fermented liquid was improved, TP release was lower, and dewaterability of fermented sludge was enhanced. The amount of alkali needed was significantly reduced in RIA, leading to cost savings in operational costs for each ton of TS processed.

Current perspectives on acidogenic fermentation to produce volatile fatty acids from waste

Maria Ramos-Suarez et al.

Summary: This review discusses the optimization of bio-VFA production using organic wastes as substrates, focusing on the impact of feedstock pretreatment, fermentation, and primary product recovery on VFA yields. The importance of VFA recovery and purification for chemical applications is highlighted, along with the beneficial effects of in situ recovery on maintaining alkalinity levels.

Continuous recovery and enhanced yields of volatile fatty acids from a continually-fed 100 L food waste bioreactor by filtration and electrodialysis

Rhys Jon Jones et al.

Summary: A novel method for recovering volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from a continuously-fed food waste bioreactor was developed, increasing production rates to 35 mg VFA/gVSS/day by alleviating end-product inhibition and arresting methanogenesis. The recovered VFAs were concentrated to 4000 mg/L through electrodialysis, making them suitable for use as platform chemicals with minimal refining. This represents a promising means of producing sustainable platform chemicals and also helps reduce methane emissions from bioreactors.

Bio-based crotonic acid from polyhydroxybutyrate: synthesis and photocatalyzed hydroacylation

Adriano Parodi et al.

Summary: A novel thermolytic distillation process was developed to depolymerize polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) for selective production of crotonic acid. The study also investigated the versatility of crotonic acid as a platform chemical through a photochemical approach, achieving satisfactory functionalization independently of the source of crotonic acid.
