Deep convolutional neural network-based classification of cancer cells on cytological pleural effusion images

Xiaofeng Xie et al.

Summary: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Cytology plays a crucial role in the initial evaluation and diagnosis of lung cancer patients. However, due to the subjective nature of cytopathologists and regional variations in diagnostic levels, liquid-based cytological diagnosis results have low consistency, leading to misdiagnoses and missed diagnoses. In this study, a weakly supervised deep learning method using a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) was performed for the classification of benign and malignant cells in lung cytological images. The results showed high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity in classifying malignant and benign lesions using the proposed method. In comparison, senior and junior cytopathologists had higher and lower average accuracies, respectively. Moreover, the proposed deep learning method is expected to assist pathologists with different levels of experience in the diagnosis of cancer cells in cytological pleural effusion images in the future.

Microscopic impedance cytometry for quantifying single cell shape

Tao Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ability of impedance flow cytometry to measure the shape of single cells/particles. A new metric, tilt index, was proposed to quantify the tilt level of the impedance pulses, which was found to be independent on the trajectories of the micro-objects. Experimental results using a homemade lock-in amplifier on polystyrene beads and Euglena gracilis cells validated the new metric's capability to characterize the shape of single cells/particles without microscopy.

Label-Free Multivariate Biophysical Phenotyping-Activated Acoustic Sorting at the Single-Cell Level

Peixian Li et al.

Summary: Biophysical markers of cells have shown promise in studying, characterizing, and classifying different cell types. The lack of cell sorting ability based on multivariate biophysical markers presents a challenge in isolating specific cell types. This study demonstrates label-free and high-throughput acoustic single-cell sorting activated by the characterization of multivariate biophysical phenotypes, providing a solution to the challenges of cell purification without specific molecular biomarkers.

Case Report and Systematic Review: Sarcomatoid Parathyroid Carcinoma-A Rare, Highly Malignant Subtype

Yongchao Yu et al.

Summary: Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is a rare malignancy, and sarcomatoid parathyroid carcinoma (SaPC) is an extremely peculiar subtype with higher invasiveness. SaPC presents differences from general PC in age of onset, PTH levels, tumor size, and is often misdiagnosed as thyroid tumors. Despite some similarities, SaPC shows stronger aggressiveness and unique pathological features.
