Safety evaluation of pedestrian-vehicle interaction at signalized intersections in Changsha, China

Lin Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the unsafe conditions of pedestrian crossings at signalized intersections in Changsha, China, identifying risk factors related to severity of conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles. Significant relationships were found between severity level and characteristics of pedestrian behavior, vehicles, and conflicts, with roadway characteristics also influencing the likelihood of severe pedestrian-vehicle conflicts. Recommendations for improving the pedestrian traffic environment were proposed based on the findings.

Can Cars Gesture? A Case for Expressive Behavior Within Autonomous Vehicle and Pedestrian Interactions

Summary: This study investigates communication between autonomous vehicles and pedestrians in an urban setting. The findings suggest that expressive behaviors such as easing into a stop and stopping farther away can help pedestrians make quicker decisions to cross the road.

Evaluating pedestrian interaction preferences with a game theoretic autonomous vehicle in virtual reality

Fanta Camara et al.

Summary: This study empirically examines pedestrian behavior during road crossing in the presence of approaching autonomous vehicles in more realistic virtual reality environments, seeking to find the best parameters for controlling these interactions. The majority of participants were not expecting AVs to stop in certain scenarios, and their crossing behavior did not change in different environments and car models. These results provide initial estimates for game theoretic parameters needed by future AVs in pedestrian interactions and demonstrate how such parameters can be inferred from virtual reality experiments.

Analysis of the occurrence and severity of vehicle-pedestrian conflicts in marked and unmarked crosswalks through naturalistic driving study

Abbas Sheykhfard et al.

Summary: The study found that drivers in unmarked crosswalk areas yield at about half the rate of drivers in marked crosswalk areas. Analysis showed that pedestrian behavior in encounter conflicts and driver behavior in potential, slight, and serious conflicts are the main factors in preventing collisions.
