Wireless and battery-free technologies for neuroengineering

Sang Min Won et al.

Summary: This Review Article discusses recent progress in the development of miniaturized and ultralightweight devices for neuroengineering, which are wireless, battery-free, and fully implantable. These devices can restrict natural motions and prevent social interactions in animal models, limiting their utility in behavioural neuroscience research. However, advanced neural interfaces with optical, electrical, or fluidic functionality have emerged, capable of combining recording and stimulation modalities for closed-loop applications in basic studies or the treatment of abnormal physiological processes.

New Design Topology of High-Q Factor Printed Base Antenna Having Unequal Width and Pitch Used for Near-Field Wireless Power Transmission

Jinhyoung Kim et al.

Summary: An unequal printed structure is proposed in this article to enhance the quality factor (Q-factor) of coil antennas in wireless power transmission systems. By gradually increasing the line pitch and width along the outer diameter, the Q-factor can be maximized without changing the size and the low Q-factor of printed antennas can be improved.

Soft subdermal implant capable of wireless battery charging and programmable controls for applications in optogenetics

Choong Yeon Kim et al.

Summary: Optogenetic techniques allow precise manipulation of neuronal activity for neural circuit dissection and therapeutic interventions. Recent advances in wireless optogenetics technology have enabled investigation of brain circuits in more natural conditions. However, existing wireless implants still have limitations in terms of power requirements. A newly developed fully implantable optogenetic system allows intervention-free wireless charging and control for operation in any environment.

Optimization and Analysis of Multilayer Planar Spiral Coils for the Application of Magnetic Resonance Wireless Power Transfer to Wearable Devices

Young-Jin Park et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and optimized small multilayer planar spiral coils for wirelessly charging an in-ear wearable bio-signal monitoring device in a wine-glass-shaped transmitter based on magnetic resonance wireless power transfer. By designing effective coils with high Q-factor and coupling efficiency, the system achieved optimal wireless charging performance.

Compact Broadband Planar Resonator With a Viaed Double Spiral for Robust Wireless Power Transfer

Wenshen Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a double-spiral resonator with a via to increase bandwidth and stabilize efficiency by introducing coupling enhancement to mitigate the efficiency drops caused by high-dielectric objects. Experimental and simulation studies demonstrate the stability and high efficiency of power transfer in human-involved environments using the proposed broadband resonators. The structure is also found to be less sensitive to misalignment between the transmitter and receiver, making it a promising candidate for robust WPT systems in human-involved environments.
