High-performance hybrid time/frequency-domain topology optimization for large-scale photonics inverse design

Alec M. Hammond et al.

Summary: We present a photonics topology optimization (TO) package that can address a wide range of practical photonics design problems. The package incorporates robustness and manufacturing constraints and can scale to large devices and massive parallelism. It employs a hybrid algorithm that solves multiple frequency-domain TO problems using a mature time-domain (FDTD) package and is enhanced by new filter-design sources and material-interpolation methods.

Improving accuracy of the numerical solution of Maxwell's equations by processing edge singularities of the electromagnetic field

Igor Semenikhin

Summary: This paper presents a methodology for increasing the accuracy and accelerating the convergence of numerical methods for solving Maxwell's equations by considering the behavior of the electromagnetic field near the geometric edges of structures. Several algorithms for handling singularities in two-dimensional structures are discussed, showing significant accuracy improvement and convergence acceleration. The convergence of spectral methods is observed to enhance from algebraic to exponential or close to exponential in certain cases.
