Ultrasonic Waveguides for Quench Detection in HTS Magnets

M. Marchevsky et al.

Summary: High-temperature superconductors (HTS) have a significant impact on the development of future particle accelerators and fusion energy systems. The slow propagation of the normal zone in HTS presents a key challenge, making voltage-based quench detection difficult. In this study, we propose a non-voltage quench detection solution based on monitoring ultrasonic wave propagation, which shows promise for practical use in HTS magnets.

Development of fiber Bragg grating strain sensor with temperature compensation for measurement of cryogenic structures

Toru Shiratsuchi et al.

Summary: The aim of the study is to develop pre-tension packaged FBG strain sensors with temperature compensation for cryogenic environments and clarify their performance. The developed FBG sensor includes both strain sensor and temperature compensation sensor to avoid transverse effect and strain transfer error. Experimental results demonstrate superior performance of the developed FBG strain sensor throughout the temperature range.

Strain Transfer Characteristics of Multi-Layer Optical Fiber Sensors with Temperature-Dependent Properties at Low Temperature

Taolue Yang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the strain transfer characteristics of optical fiber sensors in extreme environments, proposing a three-layer shear lag model that considers temperature gradients and conducting case studies. The results show that different temperature load configurations cause different strain transfer error features, with the protective layer playing a main role and the need for carefully designed geometrical parameters.

Arc-Induced Long-Period Fiber Gratings at INESC TEC. Part I: Fabrication, Characterization and Mechanisms of Formation

Gaspar Rego et al.

Summary: This work reviews the significant achievements of INESC TEC in fabricating long-period fiber gratings using the electric arc technique, focusing on the fabrication setup, fiber type, and fabrication parameters' effects on the gratings' transmission spectra. The theory and mechanisms responsible for the formation of the gratings are discussed, supported by measurements of the fiber temperature during electric arc discharge.
